A Prayer for a Good Night's Sleep
It is late, and the house has finally gone quiet, but your mind has not. Maybe you keep replaying a conversation, or bracing for tomorrow, or watching the clock count down the hours of rest you are losing. The harder you try to fall asleep, the more awake you feel. Exhaustion has a particular loneliness to it, lying there in the dark while the rest of the world seems to be resting easily. You do not have to fix everything before you close your eyes. You can lay the day down, unfinished as it is, and let God keep watch over the hours you cannot control. Before you drift off, turn the tossing into a prayer.
“I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”Psalm 4:8
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”Psalm 127:2
“When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.”Proverbs 3:24
“I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.”Psalm 3:5
A prayer you can pray
Father, I am tired, and my thoughts will not settle. Quiet the noise in my head, the worries I keep turning over, the things I said and the things I forgot to do. I cannot hold the world together through the night, so I lay it down and place it in Your hands. Loosen the tension in my body and slow my racing heart. Guard my home, my loved ones, and everyone I care about while we sleep. Take from me the fear of the dark hours and the dread of the morning. Help me to rest, not because everything is resolved, but because You are awake while I am not. Let me lie down in peace and trust You to hold what I release. Give me sleep that heals, and wake me gently to Your mercy. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this slowly, lying down, letting each line loosen something you have been gripping. The psalmist knew sleepless nights and still could say, I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep, because the LORD alone made him dwell in safety. Another psalm speaks of the striving that steals rest, of rising early and sitting up late eating the bread of sorrows, and then quietly promises that so he giveth his beloved sleep. Sleep, in Scripture, is often a gift received rather than a prize earned. Proverbs offers a tender word for the anxious: when thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid, and thy sleep shall be sweet. If your mind keeps racing, try naming three things you are handing to God, then stop. If sleeplessness has become a pattern, tell someone you trust; rest is not weakness, and you were not made to carry the night alone.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus slept. The Gospels tell of Him asleep in the back of a boat while a storm tossed the water, so at peace that the terrified disciples had to wake Him. He knew bone-deep tiredness, long days pressed by crowds, nights spent in prayer on a hillside. He is not impatient with your exhaustion. He invited the weary and heavy laden to come to Him for rest, and He meant the whole of you, body and soul. When you cannot quiet your own mind, He is near, keeping watch over the dark hours you cannot see through. You can close your eyes tonight the way a child falls asleep in a safe house, trusting that Someone stronger is awake and holding everything you had to set down.

Questions people ask
Why can't I sleep even when I pray about it?
Prayer is not a switch that turns off a racing mind, and a sleepless night does not mean God ignored you. Sometimes anxiety, caffeine, grief, pain, or a body out of rhythm needs practical care too. Keep praying, and also tend to the ordinary things: a darker room, a earlier screen-off, a walk in daylight. If sleeplessness lingers for weeks, talk to a doctor. God works through both prayer and wisdom, and caring for your body is not a lack of faith.
Is there a prayer I can say when I wake up at 3am?
Yes. When you wake in the dark, you can breathe the psalmist's words: I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. Keep it simple. Instead of fighting the wakefulness, hand Him whatever surfaced, thank Him that He is awake, and let your breathing slow. You do not need long words at 3am, only a turning of your heart toward the One who is keeping watch while the house sleeps.
Does God care about something as small as my sleep?
He does. Scripture says He gives His beloved sleep, which means rest is something He delights to hand you, not a small thing beneath His notice. The same God who counts the stars counts your sleepless hours. Your tiredness matters to Him because you matter to Him. Nothing about your ordinary body, its need for rest and healing, is too small to bring to a Father who made you and watches over you through the night.
