A prayer you can pray right now
A Prayer for Anxiety and When You Are Overwhelmed
When anxiety has its hand around your throat, it is hard to even form words. Your thoughts race, your chest tightens, and everything in you insists that the worst is about to happen. If that is where you are right now, you do not need to fix your feelings before you can pray. You can come to God exactly as anxious as you are. He is not waiting for you to calm down first. Below is a prayer for anxiety and for the days you feel completely overwhelmed, that you can pray slowly, breathing, as many times as you need to.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”Philippians 4:6
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:7
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”1 Peter 5:7
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Matthew 11:28
A prayer you can pray
Father, my mind will not stop and my body is tense with worry, and I am tired of carrying this. I bring You every anxious thought, the real fears and the imagined ones, and I lay them down before You. Quiet the storm inside me. Slow my racing thoughts and steady my breathing. Where I am overwhelmed, carry what I cannot. Remind me that I do not have to hold the whole future at once; I only have to be here, with You, right now. Give me Your peace, the kind that does not depend on everything being fixed. I cast all my care on You, because You care for me. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this slowly, and let it be as much about turning toward God as about saying the right words. Philippians gives a pattern for anxious minds: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Name the specific fears to Him rather than letting them swirl unnamed. Then hold on to the promise attached: the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds. Let Peter's words become a physical act: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you, as if you are handing God each worry one at a time. And hear Jesus invitation for the overwhelmed: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This prayer is not a magic off switch for anxiety, and it is not a replacement for good help where you need it, but it is a real place to bring the weight.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus was not detached from human distress; He entered it. He met panicking people in storms and said, Peace, be still, and He told His anxious friends that He was leaving them His own peace, not the fragile calm the world sells but something deeper. He knows that anxiety is not a moral failure; it is a form of suffering, and He is gentle with the suffering. When you pray through anxiety, you are turning toward the One who calms storms and who invites the weary and heavy laden to come to Him and find rest. He does not roll His eyes at your fear. He draws near to it.

Questions people ask
I prayed and I still feel anxious. Did I do it wrong?
No. Anxiety often does not vanish the moment you pray, and that is not a sign of failure or weak faith. Peace can come gradually, or it can be something you keep returning to God for, breath by breath. The point is not to instantly feel calm but to keep turning toward God with the fear. Keep praying, even through the anxiety.
Is anxiety a sin I need to repent of?
No. Anxiety is a form of human suffering, not a moral failing, and Jesus is gentle with those who suffer. The Bible's invitations to cast your care on God are comfort, not condemnation. Do not pile shame on top of the fear. Bring your anxiety to God as something to be carried and healed, not punished.
Should I get help for anxiety, or just pray?
Both. Prayer is real and powerful, and God also works through counselors, doctors, trusted friends, and good care. If anxiety is overwhelming your life, please reach for help as well as prayer; that is wisdom, not a lack of faith. God is glad to meet you through every kind of help He provides.
