Father, You are a refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and trouble is where my work lives. Go with me into the next call. Give me steady hands and a clear head when chaos hits, courage to act, and compassion for the person on the worst day of their life. Protect me from harm, and protect my heart from the numbness that creeps in after too many hard scenes. When I cannot save someone, hold them and hold me. Bring me people who understand, and let me not carry alone what I saw today. Bless my fellow responders on every shift and in every town. Make me a peacemaker in the middle of disaster, and bring me home whole. Trade my exhaustion for Your rest. In the name of Jesus, amen.

How do I stop the hard calls from following me home?
They follow you because you are human and you cared, not because something is wrong with you. Do not stuff them down; naming what you saw to God, a peer, or a counselor is what keeps them from festering. Ask the Lord, your refuge in trouble, to carry what you cannot set down. Build rhythms that let you decompress before you walk in your own front door. And reach for help early rather than waiting until you are breaking. He is present in the aftermath, not just the emergency.
How do I keep from going numb after seeing so much?
Numbness is your mind's overloaded circuit breaker, and it is common in this work. The guard against it is not toughing it out but staying connected: to God, to people who understand, and to your own feelings when they surface. Ask God to keep your heart tender even amid hard scenes. Talk to a chaplain or counselor before the numbness hardens into something heavier. Jesus stayed compassionate in the middle of relentless human need, and He can keep your heart soft when the job pushes it toward stone.
Is it selfish to pray for my own safety when others are the emergency?
Not at all. God cares about you as much as the people you rush to help. Praying, fear thou not; for I am with thee, over your own life is not selfish; it is honest, and it keeps you able to serve. You cannot pour out from an empty or broken self. Ask Him to protect you and to bring you home, and ask Him to help those you serve in the same breath. He holds the rescuer and the rescued together, and both matter to Him.
