A Prayer Before Surgery
The night before surgery, or the hour of it, is a strange and quiet kind of fear. So much is out of your hands, literally, and the waiting can be worse than the thing itself. Whether the surgery is yours or belongs to someone you love, you do not have to walk into it alone or pretend you are calm. God is not asking you to be brave on your own strength. He is asking you to put your hand in His. Below is a prayer for the morning of, or the night before, that you can pray in the pre-op room, the waiting room, or the dark of your own bed.

A prayer you can pray
Father, tomorrow is out of my hands, and that frightens me, so I put it into Yours. I ask You to guide the surgeon and the whole team, steady their hands, sharpen their minds, and let their skill be an instrument of Your mercy. Watch over every moment I will not be awake for. Guard against complications, and bring healing quickly. Quiet my racing thoughts tonight and give me sleep. And whatever the outcome, hold me, because You have promised to be with me and to uphold me. I will not fear, for You are my God. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this the night before or the morning of, and pray it as many times as the fear comes back. When your thoughts spiral, put words to them the way Philippians teaches: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. That is permission to tell God exactly what you are afraid of, and a promise follows it: the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds. Lean on Isaiah when you cannot sleep: Fear thou not; for I am with thee. And do not go in silent; tell someone, and ask them to pray with you and to sit in the waiting room, so you are held by God and by people at once.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus knows what it is to face a frightening thing you cannot avoid. The night before the cross, He prayed in such distress that His sweat was like drops of blood, and He was honest with the Father about His fear. He does not look down on your dread; He has felt something like it. So when you pray before surgery, you are not talking to a distant deity who cannot relate. You are talking to the One who went through the dark ahead of you and came out the other side, and who promises to be with you in the room you are afraid to enter.

Keep it simple: Father, I am afraid, and I am Yours. Watch over me. You do not need many words. God hears the honest turning of your heart. If someone is with you, ask them to hold your hand and pray a line out loud. You can carry Isaiah with you: Fear thou not; for I am with thee.
Is it faithless to feel scared before surgery?
Not at all. Fear is a human response to a real threat, and even Jesus felt anguish before the hardest thing He faced. Faith is not the absence of fear; it is turning toward God in the middle of it. Bring the fear to Him honestly rather than trying to suppress it, and let His peace meet you there.
