A Prayer for My Children
To be a parent is to love someone more than you can protect them, and to pray for your children is one of the deepest things a mother or father ever does. Whether they are newborns or grown, thriving or struggling, close to God or far from Him, you carry them in your heart in a way you cannot always put into words. The good news is that you do not have to be a perfect parent, and you do not have to pray perfectly. You only have to keep bringing them to the One who loves them even more than you do. Father, thank You for my children; they are Your gift to me, and I do not take them for granted. I cannot be with them every moment or protect them from every harm, so I entrust them to You. Watch over their bodies, their hearts, and their futures. Give them wisdom, kind friends, and courage to do what is right. Draw them to Yourself, and let them come to know Jesus and be loved by Him more deeply than I could ever love them. Where I fail as a parent, cover my mistakes with Your grace and let my children be shaped more by Your faithfulness than by my flaws. Keep them, Lord, all the days of their lives. In Jesus name, amen.

Pray this over your children by name, out loud when you can, even while they sleep. Let God's Word shape your hopes for them. Isaiah promises, all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children, so pray for their peace and for God Himself to be their teacher. Proverbs says, Train up a child in the way he should go, which is a calling and an encouragement, not a guarantee you can control the outcome; your job is faithfulness, not perfection. Remember the Psalm that calls children an heritage of the LORD, a trust rather than a possession. And take heart from Jesus, who said, Suffer little children to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Your children are welcome in His arms.

Jesus made a point of welcoming children when His own disciples tried to shoo them away. He took them up in His arms and blessed them, and He warned against anyone who would harm them. That tells you how He feels about your kids: not indifferent, not distant, but tender and protective. When you pray for your children, you are placing them into the hands of the One who called the little ones to Himself and said the kingdom belongs to such as these. How do I pray for a child who is walking away from God?
Keep praying, and do not lose heart. Bring them to God by name, ask Him to draw them, and refuse to let shame or fear do the talking. You cannot argue or force anyone into faith, but you can intercede, and God seeks the lost with more love than you carry. There is deeper help for exactly this kind of prayer, and you are not the first parent to pray it.
What if I feel like I have already failed as a parent?
Every honest parent feels this. The good news is that your children's lives do not rest finally on your performance but on God's grace, which covers your mistakes and works even through them.
