A Prayer for Pastors
You carry a congregation's joys and crises in your chest, often at the same hour. There is the sermon due again on Sunday, the hospital visit, the couple whose marriage is unraveling, the criticism that lands harder than anyone knows, and the private question of whether your own soul is being fed while you feed everyone else. Ministry is a joy and a weight, and the weight is often invisible to the very people you serve. Some weeks you feel the Spirit move; some weeks you run on fumes and faith. Whether you are preparing to preach, sitting with a grieving family, or wondering if you can keep going, this prayer is for you. Bring your calling and your weariness to the Good Shepherd who tends the shepherds too.

A prayer you can pray
Father, You called me to feed Your flock, and some days I do not know how I will find the bread. Fill me so I have something real to give. Guard my own soul while I tend others; do not let me preach a Christ I am neglecting in private. Give me courage to speak truth in love, patience with the difficult, and tenderness for the hurting. When criticism wounds me, keep me from bitterness and pride. When I am weary, be my strength, for Your grace is sufficient and Your power is made perfect in weakness. Protect my family from the cost of my calling. Keep me from performing and let me simply be faithful. Renew my first love for You, so that I shepherd from overflow and not from an empty well. In the name of Jesus, the Chief Shepherd, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this in your study, before you step into the pulpit, or on the drive home from a hard visit. Scripture speaks directly to the shepherd's task and burden. Peter's charge is yours: feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof willingly. Paul's warning is worth keeping close: take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, for the church was purchased with His own blood, so your first care must include your own soul. When you run dry, Isaiah promises that those who wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength. And in your weakness God says, my grace is sufficient for thee, for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Let elders, mentors, and other pastors carry this with you; you are not the only shepherd God has.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, the one who lays down His life for the sheep and knows each by name. He had compassion on the crowds because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and He still cares for the shepherds who grow tired feeding them. He knows what it is to pour out until you are drained, to be misunderstood by the very people you love, to carry others' grief and pray alone in the dark. He does not ask you to be the savior of your church; He already is. Your job is faithfulness, and His grace is sufficient for the rest. Come to Him not only as a minister but as one of His own sheep who needs feeding too.

How do I keep my own faith alive while pouring out to everyone else?
This is the quiet danger of ministry: feeding others from a soul you have stopped feeding. Paul's charge is to take heed to yourself first, then to the flock. Guard time with God that is not sermon prep, where you come as a sheep and not a shepherd. Let someone pastor you. When you wait on the Lord, He renews your strength, but you have to actually stop and wait. Your congregation needs a pastor who is being fed more than one who is merely busy.
Criticism from my congregation is crushing me. How do I handle it?
Criticism cuts deep because you have given so much of yourself. Bring the sting to God before you bring a reply to the critic. Ask Him to guard you from both bitterness and wounded pride. Weigh whether there is truth to learn from, then release the rest to Him. His grace is sufficient for you, and His approval is the one that holds. Talk it through with a trusted mentor or fellow pastor. You cannot please everyone, and you were never called to; you were called to be faithful.
I am close to burnout. Is it okay to admit I cannot keep going?
Yes, and admitting it may be the most faithful thing you do this year. Burnout is not a lack of faith; it is a body and soul that have given past their limit. God said His strength is made perfect in weakness, which means your weakness is not disqualifying. Tell your elders, a mentor, or a counselor the truth. Take real rest. Even Jesus withdrew from the crowds to pray. The flock belongs to the Chief Shepherd, not to you, and He can hold them while you recover.
