A Prayer for a Sick Loved One
Watching someone you love suffer is its own kind of pain, and there is a helplessness in it that words barely reach. You would take the illness yourself if you could. You cannot fix it, and that is agony. But you can do the one thing that actually matters more than fixing: you can carry them to God, who loves them even more than you do. Below is a prayer you can pray over the person you love, whether they are down the hall or far away, awake or unconscious, hopeful or afraid. You do not have to have the right words. You only have to bring them, and yourself, to the Lord.
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:”James 5:14
“And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”James 5:15
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”Psalm 34:18
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”Matthew 11:28
A prayer you can pray
Father, I bring You someone I love who is sick, and I cannot make them well, but You can. I lift them into Your hands. Heal their body, ease their pain, and calm their fear. Give the doctors and nurses wisdom, and let Your mercy be over every treatment. Comfort them when I cannot be there, and let them feel that they are not alone. And help me, too, because I am tired and afraid and I do not know how this ends. Give me strength to be present, patience to keep loving well, and peace that does not depend on the outcome. I trust them to You, who are near to the brokenhearted. In Jesus name, amen.
How to pray this
You can pray this by name over the person you love, at their bedside or in your car or in the middle of the night when sleep will not come. Then let others in. James writes, Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him. Sickness was never meant to be carried in isolation, so ask people to pray with you and for them. When words run out, remember what God is like: the LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, both theirs and yours. And hear Jesus own invitation for the exhausted caregiver: Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. You are allowed to be weak here. Bring your weakness to Him too.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus was moved by the sick and the grieving; the Gospels say plainly that He had compassion, that His heart went out to suffering people, and that He came near when others kept their distance. He wept at a graveside even though He knew resurrection was coming, which means He does not despise your tears or ask you to pretend you are fine. When you pray for someone you love, you are handing them to the One whose love for them is deeper than your own and whose care does not sleep. Whatever happens, He is with them, and He is with you.

Questions people ask
What do I pray when I do not even know what to ask for anymore?
Pray honestly, even if it is only, Lord, help them, and help me. Romans says the Spirit helps us when we do not know what we ought to pray. You do not need eloquent words; you need to keep turning toward God with the raw truth of where you are. He understands the prayer underneath the words you cannot find.
How do I keep going when I am exhausted from caring for them?
Caregiving is heavy, and running yourself into the ground helps no one. Let people help you, accept meals and relief, and bring your own depletion to God, who invites the weary to come to Him for rest. Loving someone well over time means being cared for too. That is not selfish; it is how you last.
Can I ask my church or others to pray, even if I am not sure what I believe?
Yes. You do not have to have it all figured out to ask for prayer, and most churches would count it a privilege to carry this with you. You can ask people to pray with you now. Bringing the burden into the light, and letting others help hold it, is itself a step toward the God who meets people exactly where they are.
