A Prayer for Veterans
The war may be over on paper, but for many who served it never fully ends. There are nights the memories come back uninvited, sounds that snap you into a place you left years ago, friendships forged and lost that no one at home can understand. Sometimes the hardest battle starts after the homecoming: finding your footing, feeling seen, carrying the weight of what you saw while the rest of the world moves on. Whether you served long ago or recently, whether you wear the wounds where others can see them or where no one can, this prayer is for you. Father, You know what I carry that I cannot say out loud. You know the names I still grieve, the nights sleep will not come, and the parts of me that came home changed. Healing often comes with help, so reach for a counselor, a chaplain, a veterans' group, and a church that will walk with you.

Jesus was called a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. He bore wounds on His own body and did not hide them; after He rose, He still showed the scars. How do I find peace when the memories will not leave me alone?
Intrusive memories are not a sign of weak faith; they are how a wounded mind holds onto what it could not process. Bring them honestly to God, who is near to the brokenhearted and heals wounds no one else can see. His peace is offered right in the middle of a troubled heart, not only after it calms. Prayer and help work together, so reach for a counselor trained in trauma alongside your prayer. Healing is usually slow and layered. Be patient with yourself; God is patient with you.
I carry guilt over things I did or could not stop. Where do I take it?
Take it to the One whose whole mission was to proclaim liberty to the captives, and moral injury is a real captivity. Do not carry it silently until it crushes you. Speak it to God, and speak it to a trusted chaplain, pastor, or counselor who will not flinch. God's mercy is deeper than your worst day, and He does not hold the contrite heart at arm's length.
