A prayer you can pray
Father, You are the God of all comfort, and I have been pouring out comfort all day. Fill me again, because I cannot give what I do not have. As I walk into rooms full of fear and grief, go before me. Give me words when words are needed and the courage to sit in silence when they are not. Let me carry Your presence into the places where hope feels far away, the bedside, the cell, the waiting room. Help me meet each person where they are, with their doubts and their anger, and not rush their pain. Guard my own heart from absorbing so much sorrow that it breaks me. He is the good shepherd who walks with people through the valley of the shadow of death so they need fear no evil. When you sit with someone in their darkest hour, you are carrying the presence of the One who never leaves. You cannot give what you have not received, and that is not a flaw; it is by design. Paul says God comforts us so that we can comfort others, which means the comfort must first flow into you. When you are empty, stop and let the God of all comfort refill you. Pouring out from a dry well helps no one and eventually breaks the one pouring.
What do I say to someone whose pain has no answer?

You are absorbing more sorrow in a week than most carry in a year, and it is real weight. Do not carry it alone or silently. Bring each day's grief to God and hand it back to Him rather than storing it. Debrief with peers, and let a counselor or spiritual director help you process what you witness. Build rest and boundaries into your rhythm; even Jesus withdrew from the crowds. The God of all comfort meant for you to be comforted too, not to be an endless reservoir that runs dry and cracks.
