John 14
With the disciples' hearts troubled by talk of His leaving, Jesus comforts them: in His Father's house are many rooms, and He goes to prepare a place. He answers Thomas with one of His greatest claims, I am the way, the truth, and the life, tells Philip that to see Him is to see the Father, and promises another Comforter, the Holy Spirit, and a peace the world cannot give.
What happens in John 14
Jesus urges His troubled disciples to believe in God and in Him. In His Father's house are many mansions, and He goes to prepare a place, promising to come again and receive them to Himself. When Thomas says they do not know the way, Jesus declares, I am the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father but by Him. Philip asks to be shown the Father, and Jesus answers that whoever has seen Him has seen the Father.
He promises that whatever they ask in His name He will do, and that love for Him is shown by keeping His commandments. John 14 in context
This chapter continues the farewell discourse in the upper room, immediately after the foot washing and the foretelling of betrayal and denial. The disciples are shaken by Jesus' talk of departure, and the whole chapter is pastoral comfort for people about to lose the One they love.
It introduces the promise of the Holy Spirit that chapters 15 and 16 will develop, framing Jesus' death and departure as gain rather than loss for those who trust Him.
