Proverbs 3
A father urges his son to keep wisdom's teaching in his heart, to trust the LORD completely rather than his own understanding, and to acknowledge God in all his ways. He calls wisdom more precious than silver or rubies, a tree of life. He commands generosity, honoring God with firstfruits, and warns against envying the wicked or withholding good from a neighbor.
What happens in Proverbs 3
The chapter is a father's instruction rather than a story. He opens by pressing his son to remember his teaching, promising length of days and peace, and to bind mercy and truth around his neck. The heart of the passage calls the son to trust the LORD with all his heart, lean not on his own understanding, and acknowledge God in every path, so that God will direct it. The father urges the fear of the LORD, honoring God with the firstfruits of increase, and not despising his discipline, since the LORD corrects those he loves as a father.
He praises wisdom as more valuable than fine gold, a tree of life to those who grasp her, and traces wisdom to God's own work in founding the earth. He closes with neighborly duties: give good when you can, do not plot harm, do not envy the violent, for the LORD's blessing rests on the just.

How Proverbs 3 points to Jesus
The New Testament calls Christ the wisdom of God, and Proverbs 3 lets us see why. The wisdom by which God founded the earth is later revealed as the eternal Son, through whom all things were made. To lean not on our own understanding but to trust the LORD with all our heart finds its fullest expression in trusting Jesus, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
The tree of life, offered here to those who grasp wisdom, opens again at the cross, where a tree of shame became the tree of life for the world. Even the fatherly discipline of this chapter is taken up in Hebrews as proof that God treats us as sons, chastening those he loves in the pattern of the Father who did not spare his own Son.

Reflection
Trusting God with all your heart is easy to recite and hard to live, because it asks you to stop leaning on the one voice you trust most, your own. Today, in the decision you keep turning over alone, try acknowledging him in it. His promise is not that you will understand, but that he will make the path straight.
