A Prayer for a Baby Dedication
Holding a newborn, or watching your child be lifted up before a church, brings a love so large it is almost frightening. A prayer you can pray
Father, we bring You this child, this gift we did not earn and cannot repay. For this child we prayed, and You have given us what we asked. Now, like Hannah of old, we lend this little one back to You; as long as they live, we want them to be Yours. We know that children are a heritage from You, and we do not hold this one tightly as if we made them alone. Give us wisdom and patience to raise them to know You and to love others. Guard their body, their mind, and their heart through every year ahead. Draw them to Jesus early, and hold onto them when the world pulls hard. Make our home a place where they see Your love. We trust them to Your care. In the name of Jesus, amen.

What is the difference between baby dedication and baptism?
Traditions vary, so your own church is the best place to ask. In general, a baby dedication is the parents and church dedicating the child to God and committing to raise them in faith; it is the adults making promises, not the child. Some traditions baptize infants, others reserve baptism for a later, personal profession of faith. What both share is entrusting the child to God and surrounding them with a community that will help them grow toward Him. The heart behind either is the same longing you feel.
What do I pray over my baby at their dedication?
