A Prayer in the Middle of a Storm
A storm has a way of shrinking the world down to the sound of the wind and the pounding of your own heart. But You are my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, and I am running to You. You are able to speak peace over what terrifies me; would You still the storm, or if not the storm, then still me inside it. When I pass through these waters, do not let them overwhelm me. Hold my family and everyone caught in this with me. Quiet my racing thoughts, steady my shaking hands, and let me know You are here in the dark and the noise. I cannot fix this, but You are not far off. Be near, be near. In Jesus name, amen.

The same One who commanded that storm is with you in yours. Sometimes He calms the storm around you, and sometimes He calms you in the middle of a storm that keeps raging, but He is never absent and never overwhelmed. He knows what fear feels like in a human body; He faced His own darkest night with sweat like blood. So when you cry out from the middle of this, you are crying to One who understands and who has power over the very thing that frightens you. He hears you, and He is in the boat.

I prayed and the storm did not stop. Did God not hear me?
He heard you. Scripture shows both storms that Jesus calmed and storms His people had to pass through, with God's promise being His presence in the waters, not always their removal. Sometimes He stills the storm; sometimes He steadies you within it, which is its own miracle. Unanswered in the way you hoped is not the same as unheard. Keep crying out, keep leaning on Him, and let others hold you up. And in a physically dangerous storm, take every practical step to safety; that is not a lack of faith.
How do I stay calm when everything is falling apart around me?
