Bible verse
Isaiah 53:5

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
What it means
Written centuries before the cross, this looks straight at it. The suffering here is not deserved by the sufferer but borne for others. Our wrongdoing was laid on Him; the punishment that should have broken our peace fell on Him instead. His wounds became our wholeness. This is the heart of the gospel: Jesus took what we owed so that we could receive what we never could have earned. Where we expected judgment, He gives healing, and where we expected distance, He gives peace with God.
