A Prayer for Those in Ministry
Ministry looks from the outside like a calling and feels from the inside, some weeks, like a slow bleed. You carry everyone's crises and have few places to bring your own. You preach on Sunday and doubt on Monday. You watch people leave, criticize, or drift, and you take it home in your chest. The needs never stop, the boundary between your soul and your job blurs, and the very work of pointing others to God can leave your own tank empty. Whether you pastor a church, lead a ministry, serve on staff, or shepherd in some quieter way, you are allowed to be the one who needs prayer for once. Before the next sermon, the next hospital visit, the next hard meeting, bring your own weary soul to God.

A prayer you can pray
Father, I spend myself pouring out for others, and today I come with nothing left to give. You called me to this ministry and gave me mercy for it, so I ask You now for mercy again. Renew my strength; let me wait on You and mount up with wings as eagles, run and not be weary, walk and not faint. Guard me from the burnout and the bitterness that stalk this work. When people criticize or leave, hold my heart steady in Your love and not in their approval. Help me not to grow weary in well doing. Keep me faithful to preach and live Your word, in season and out. And remind me that before I am Your servant, I am Your child, loved not for what I produce but simply because I am Yours. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this when the tank is empty, before you have to pour out again. Second Corinthians names the very thing you fight: because this ministry is a gift of mercy, we do not lose heart, we faint not. Galatians repeats the charge and the promise: do not grow weary in well doing, for in due season you shall reap. Isaiah gives the tired servant the words to pray directly, that those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength and mount up with wings as eagles. And Second Timothy calls you to preach the word in season and out of season, with all longsuffering. Do not shepherd alone; find other ministers, a spiritual director, or a small circle who will pastor you, because the one who feeds everyone must also be fed.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus ministered until He was exhausted, and He knew when to withdraw. Again and again the Gospels show Him slipping away to a lonely place to pray, stepping back from the crowds that always wanted more. He felt the drain of ministry; once, when a woman touched Him in a crowd, He knew that power had gone out of Him. He was misunderstood by the crowds, abandoned by His friends, and rejected in His own hometown, so He understands the wounds unique to this calling. He does not ask you to be a bottomless well. He offers Himself as the source, inviting the weary to come to Him and find rest for their souls, minister included.

I'm burned out in ministry but feel guilty resting. What do I pray?
Bring the guilt to God and let Him correct it, because the belief that rest is a betrayal is not from Him. Jesus Himself withdrew from the crowds to pray, so stepping back is following His example, not failing your calling. Isaiah promises that those who wait on the Lord renew their strength; waiting is not laziness, it is how the strength returns. Ask God for permission to rest, for renewal, and for wisdom about your pace. You cannot pour from an empty vessel, and He never asked you to.
Criticism from people I serve is crushing me. How do I handle it?
Take the hurt to God honestly; when the wound comes from the very people you have poured into, it cuts deep, and pretending otherwise does not help. Ask Him to anchor your worth in His love rather than in the congregation's approval, which will always be mixed. Weigh criticism for any truth worth hearing, then release the rest to God rather than carrying it in your chest. Remember Jesus was rejected by His own; you are in His company. Lean on a trusted friend or fellow minister who can help you hold it.
My own faith feels dry while I feed everyone else. Is that normal?
It is more common in ministry than anyone admits, and it is not a disqualification. Bring the dryness to God plainly; He would rather have your honesty than your performance. Second Corinthians roots ministry in receiving mercy, so return to being fed before you feed, through Scripture, prayer, and worship where you are not the one leading. Ask someone to pastor you. The one who serves the bread of life still has to eat. Ask God to renew your own soul, and be patient; dry seasons pass.
