A Prayer for Elders and Deacons
You did not take this office for recognition, and you rarely get any. You serve the church in the ways that seldom make the announcements: the late-night call from a family in crisis, the quiet meeting to settle a conflict, the widow's leaking roof, the budget no one else wants to pray over. You are entrusted with the care of souls and the health of the body, and it is a weight that can wake you at night. There are hard members to love, hard decisions to make, and hard limits to your own time and strength. Whether you shepherd as an elder or serve as a deacon, you can bring the flock God gave you, and your own tired heart, to the Chief Shepherd who sees it all.

A prayer you can pray
Father, You have set me to help watch over Your flock, and I feel the weight of it. Give me the heart of a shepherd, not a hireling: to feed Your people willingly and not by constraint, to serve for love and never for gain or standing. Grant me wisdom in the decisions that affect real lives, and patience with the people who are hardest to love. Help me take heed to myself as well as to the flock, so that I lead from a life You are still shaping. Guard the church from division and from wolves, and give me courage to protect it. Let me watch for souls with joy and not with grief. And when I grow weary, remind me that I answer to You, the Chief Shepherd, who first laid down His life for these sheep. In Jesus name, amen.

First Timothy promises that those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing and great boldness in the faith. And Hebrews reminds you that leaders watch for souls as those who must give account. Serve as a team; elders and deacons who pray together carry the church far better than any one of them alone.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, the one who does not flee when the wolf comes but lays down His life for the sheep. He knew every one of His own by name, went after the single stray, and gathered the bruised and the failing rather than breaking them. He also washed His disciples' feet, showing that the greatest in His kingdom serves the rest. When you shepherd or serve the church, you are working under Him, the Chief Shepherd, doing His work with His flock. The people in your care were bought at the highest price, and He who bought them is with you as you tend them, and He will one day thank the faithful servant Himself.

How do I deal with a difficult or divisive church member?
Bring that person to God by name before you bring your frustration to anyone else. Ask for genuine love toward them, for wisdom to know when to bear patiently and when to address the harm directly, and for courage to protect the wider flock from division. Scripture calls you to watch for souls, and sometimes that includes hard conversations held in humility, not avoidance. Pray for their heart and yours, seek counsel from fellow leaders rather than acting alone, and entrust the outcome to the Chief Shepherd who loves that difficult person too.
The responsibility of caring for people's souls overwhelms me. Is that right?
Feeling the weight is fitting; Acts says the flock was purchased with Christ's own blood, so the care is precious and the stakes are real. But you were never meant to carry it as though the outcome rested on you alone. Take heed to the flock and to yourself, share the load with your fellow elders and deacons, and remember Hebrews says you watch for souls as those who must give account to God, not as those who must be God. Bring the overwhelm to Him, and let the Chief Shepherd carry what you cannot.
I serve behind the scenes and no one notices. Does it matter?
It matters immensely to God, whatever people see. First Timothy promises that those who serve well gain a good standing and great boldness in the faith, and much of a deacon's best work is meant to be quiet. Bring any discouragement over being unseen to God and ask Him to keep your heart serving of a ready mind rather than for recognition. The leaking roof you fixed, the meal you arranged, the family you helped in private, He sees all of it, and He does not forget the labor done in His name.
