A Prayer for Someone With Cancer
A cancer diagnosis divides life into before and after. Suddenly there are appointments and scans and words you never wanted to learn, and a body that feels like it has betrayed you. Maybe you are the one facing chemotherapy, counting down to the next infusion, watching your hair thin and your appetite disappear. Or maybe you are loving someone through it, sitting in waiting rooms, learning to read a doctor's face. Fear comes in waves, often at three in the morning. You do not have to be brave or have strong faith to pray right now. You only have to be honest. Bring the fear, the anger, the exhaustion, and the fragile hope, all of it, to the God who is not frightened by any of it.
“Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.”Jeremiah 17:14
“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”Psalm 103:2
“Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;”Psalm 103:3
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”Isaiah 41:10
A prayer you can pray
Father, this disease is bigger than I am, but it is not bigger than You. I lift up this body worn down by scans and treatment and fear, and I ask You to heal. Where the doctors have skill, guide their hands and sharpen their eyes. Where medicine can reach, let it work; where it cannot, let Your mercy go. Calm the terror that grips me in the dark hours. Steady me through the sickness that follows treatment, the days too weak to stand. I do not know what the road holds, so I am asking You to walk every step of it with me and with the ones who love me. Whatever comes, do not let go of me. Be my praise even here. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this in your own words when the borrowed ones run out. Jeremiah's cry is a good place to begin, asking the Lord to heal, for He is our praise. Remember that Scripture invites you to bless the Lord and forget not all His benefits, the One who forgives all our iniquities and heals our diseases; hold that truth gently, without turning it into a formula that guarantees a particular outcome. Cling to Isaiah's promise that God upholds you with the right hand of His righteousness. Practically: let people help. Accept the meals, the rides, the company. Ask your church to pray over you. You do not have to carry the fear alone, and you were never meant to.
The One who hears this prayer
When lepers came to Jesus, outcast and untouchable, He did not recoil. The Gospels say He reached out and touched them, restoring not only their bodies but their belonging. He wept at a friend's grave before He did anything else, which means He does not scold your tears. He understands a body in anguish; He sweat and suffered and knew what it was to dread what was coming. Whatever this illness does, it cannot separate you from His love. He may heal your body in this life, or He may carry you to a healing more complete than any scan could measure. Either way, He is near, and He is holding on to you.

Questions people ask
Does God still heal cancer today, and can my prayer make a difference?
God still heals, and prayer matters more than you know. But healing is not a vending machine, and unanswered prayer is never proof of too little faith. Some are healed in the body here; some are carried through to a wholeness beyond this life. Pray boldly for healing, involve your church, and use every gift of medicine God has provided through doctors. Then entrust the outcome to a God who loves the person you are praying for even more than you do.
I'm angry at God for letting this happen. Is it wrong to pray when I feel like that?
It is not wrong; it may be the most faithful thing you can do. The Psalms are full of people shouting their anguish at God, and He kept them in His book. Anger brought to God is still a form of trust, because you are bringing it to Him rather than turning away. He is not fragile. Tell Him exactly how it feels. He would rather have your honest rage than your polite distance.
How do I pray for someone with cancer without giving them false hope?
Pray honestly and specifically. Ask God for healing, yes, but also pray for courage, for peace on the hard days, for good sleep, for less pain, for the medical team, for the caregivers. Sit with the person more than you speak. You do not have to promise them a cure or explain why this happened. Your steady presence and your willingness to name their fear before God is a real comfort, and it points them to the One who is nearer than you can be.
