A Prayer for Our Leaders
It is easy to complain about leaders and much harder to pray for them, yet prayer is exactly what Scripture asks of us. A prayer you can pray
Father, I bring my leaders to You, the ones I trust and the ones I do not, the ones I chose and the ones I did not. You hold their hearts in Your hand like rivers of water, turning them wherever You will, so I ask You to turn them toward justice, honesty, and mercy. Give them wisdom for decisions heavier than I can imagine. Where they are proud, humble them; where they are afraid, steady them; where they would harm the vulnerable, restrain them. Surround them with honest counsel and strip away the flatterers. Let us live quiet and peaceable lives under their care. Guard my own heart from contempt, and help me pray for them more than I criticize them. Above all, may Your purposes be done through them, or in spite of them. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Paul is direct: he urges that supplications, prayers, and thanksgivings be made for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead quiet and peaceable lives. Notice he wrote that under an emperor no Christian would have voted for, which means praying for leaders is not about agreeing with them. Proverbs offers deep comfort, that the king's heart is in the hand of the Lord and He turns it wherever He wills; no leader is beyond God's reach. When a leader clearly needs wisdom, James promises that if anyone lacks it and asks God, it will be given liberally; pray that specific wisdom over them.
