A Prayer for My Mother
Your mother has carried you in ways you may only be starting to understand, some of them long before you could remember. Whether she is strong and steady or growing frail, near or far, easy to love or complicated to love, she is one of the great gifts and great mysteries of your life. Maybe you want to thank God for her while you still can. Maybe you are worried about her health, or her loneliness, or a strain between you that you long to see healed. Guard her, and give Your angels charge over her in all her ways. Draw her closer to You, and let her know she is loved and honored, not taken for granted. Even from the cross, in His final agony, Jesus thought of His mother. He looked down and made sure she would be cared for, entrusting her to a disciple He loved. He honored her to the very end. He understands the bond between a mother and her child, and He treats it as something sacred. When you pray for your mother, you are joining the One who cared for His own mother's future even as He was dying for the world. How do I pray for my mother when our relationship is painful or broken?
Honestly, and with room for your own heart. You can honor your mother, which Scripture calls us to, without pretending the hurt is not there. Ask God to work in her and in you, to heal what can be healed, and to give you grace. Honoring her does not mean tolerating harm; you can pray for her from a place of healthy boundaries.
