A Prayer for Courage
There is a moment before the hard thing where your whole body wants to turn back. The difficult conversation you have rehearsed a dozen times. The doctor's office. The new job, the first day, the stage, the stand you know you have to take. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is fear with its hands full of something more important. You may feel small right now, outmatched, sure that everyone else is braver than you. But courage is rarely a feeling you summon. More often it is something you receive, one step at a time, from God who goes ahead of you and does not leave you to face the thing alone. Before you walk toward what scares you, ask Him for the courage to take the next step.

Father, I am facing something that frightens me, and everything in me wants to shrink back. I do not feel brave. So I am asking You for courage that I cannot manufacture on my own. Remind me that You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Go before me into this. Steady my voice, my hands, my heart. When my knees feel weak, be the strength of my life. Help me to do the hard, right thing even while I am afraid, because You are with me. I do not have to be fearless; I only have to take the next step trusting that You are already there. Quiet the voice that says I am not enough for this. Be my light and my salvation, so I have nothing left to fear. In the name of Jesus, amen.

God's command to Joshua, facing an impossible task, was not be fearless but be strong and of a good courage, because the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. That is the ground of courage: not your strength, but His presence. Moses gave Israel the same promise, he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, which means the outcome does not rest on you alone. When fear names all the reasons to run, David answers, the LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear. And Paul reminds Timothy, and you, that fear is not the spirit God gave you. Courage grows when it is not carried alone, so tell someone what you are facing and ask them to stand with you and pray.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus knew real dread. In the garden the night before He died, He was in such anguish that He sweat as it were great drops of blood, and He asked the Father to take the cup from Him. He did not pretend the fear away. And then He rose and walked toward the very thing He dreaded, for love of you. He understands the trembling in you, because He has felt it. He does not stand at a distance demanding bravery; He comes near, having gone through fear Himself, and He offers His presence to steady you. Whatever you are walking toward, He has walked toward harder, and He walks with you now. You do not draw courage from within a scared heart alone; you draw it from the One beside you who has never once been overcome.

How can I be courageous when I'm terrified?

Focus on the next single step rather than the whole mountain, lean on God's promise to be with you whithersoever you go, and let His presence, not your feelings, be the ground you stand on.
