Does praying for a safe delivery mean nothing will go wrong?
No, and it would be dishonest to promise that. Prayer is not a guarantee that labor will be easy or without complication; it is the assurance that God is with you in whatever unfolds. He is 'a very present help in trouble,' present most of all in the hard moments. Trust your medical team with the physical care and trust God with your heart. Many faithful people have had difficult deliveries and still known God's nearness through them. Pray for safety boldly, and rest in His presence either way.
I am terrified of the pain and the loss of control. How do I pray?
Bring that exact fear to God rather than trying to muscle past it. Tell Him you are afraid of the pain and of not being in control, because naming it honestly is where peace begins. Breathe short prayers between contractions: 'You are with me,' 'help me,' 'Fear thou not.' Let your partner or a nurse pray over you out loud. You will not have to summon courage from nowhere.
