The Ten Virgins
Five were ready for the bridegroom, five were not. (Matthew 25:1-13, King James Version (public domain))
Ten young women await a bridegroom with their lamps. Five bring extra oil, five do not. When he is delayed and arrives at midnight, only the ready ones enter the feast; the others find the door shut.
What it means
Jesus calls us to a readiness that cannot be borrowed at the last moment, a living, tended faith. Watch, He says, for you know neither the day nor the hour. Keep your lamp filled now.
