The Good Samaritan
The neighbor is the one who shows mercy, even the outsider. (Luke 10:25-37, King James Version (public domain))
A man was beaten and left for dead on the road. A priest and a temple worker passed him by. Then a Samaritan, despised by the man's own people, stopped, bandaged him, and paid for his care.
What it means
Jesus flips the lawyer's question from 'who is my neighbor?' to 'will you be a neighbor?' Real love is not proximity to holy things but costly mercy to whoever is in front of you, especially the one you would least expect to be the hero.
