A Prayer When You Feel Like Giving Up

Galatians 6:9

There is a specific exhaustion that comes right before quitting. You have tried, and tried again, and the thing you have poured yourself into, a marriage, a calling, a recovery, a dream, a faith, seems to be going nowhere. The tank is empty, the encouragement has run out, and giving up has started to look less like failure and more like relief. If that is where you are, you are not weak for feeling it; you are tired, and there is a difference. Before you make a decision from the bottom of the well, bring the whole weary heart to God, who has a long history of meeting people at exactly the moment they wanted to quit.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”Galatians 6:9

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”Isaiah 40:31

“Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;”2 Corinthians 4:9

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”Philippians 1:6

A prayer you can pray

Father, I am so tired. I feel like giving up, and I do not have much left to give You but that honesty. I have kept going for so long, and it feels like nothing is changing. Your Word tells me not to be weary in well doing, that in due season I will reap if I faint not, so please hold me up long enough to see that season. Renew my strength when my own is gone; let me wait on You and rise again, even if only one step. Remind me that I may be cast down but I am not destroyed, persecuted but not forsaken. And if this good work in me is truly Yours, then You have promised to finish it, so finish it, Lord, because I cannot. Keep me from quitting today. Carry me when I cannot walk. In Jesus name, amen.

How to pray this

This prayer is honest, and honesty is the right starting place when you are this depleted. Paul's word is meant for the worn-out: "let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." There is a harvest, and there is a timing, and the call is simply to not faint before it. Isaiah promises renewed strength to those who "wait upon the LORD," strength given, not summoned. Paul also names the paradox of the struggling faithful, "cast down, but not destroyed," which gives words to how you feel and how you are held at once. And Philippians turns the weight off your shoulders: the good work is His to complete, and "he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it." Practically, do not decide anything final while this tired. Rest, tell someone the truth about how close you are to quitting, and let them help carry you.

The One who hears this prayer

Jesus, in the garden the night before the cross, was so overwhelmed that He sweat like drops of blood and asked if the cup could pass. He knew the desire to not go on. He did not quit, but neither did He pretend to be fine; He prayed through the anguish and asked His friends to stay near, and an angel came and strengthened Him. So He is not a stranger to the edge you are standing on. He invites the heavy-laden to come to Him for rest, and He means real rest, not one more demand. When you feel like giving up, you are not praying to someone who cannot understand. You are leaning on the One who went all the way to the end and came out the other side, and He can carry you there too.

Questions people ask

How do I know if I should keep going or if it's actually time to let something go?

This is a real and wise question, and giving up in exhaustion is different from discerning that a season has genuinely ended. The key is not to decide anything final while you are this depleted; rest first, then discern. Seek counsel from people who know you and your situation, pray for clarity, and notice the difference between quitting out of despair and releasing something with peace. God can redirect as well as sustain. Sometimes faithfulness means pressing on, and sometimes it means letting go wisely; He will help you tell which.

I've prayed for so long and nothing is changing. Why keep going?

Because change is often happening underground before it ever shows above the surface, like a seed in winter. Scripture promises a harvest "in due season" to those who do not faint, which means the timing is real but not yet visible. That does not make the waiting easy, and your weariness is valid. Lean on God's strength rather than your own, let others encourage you, and take it one day at a time. You do not have to see the whole way forward; you only have to not give up today.

Feeling this hopeless scares me. When is it more than just being tired?

Please take that seriously. There is ordinary exhaustion, and there is the kind of hopelessness that starts to feel like despair or thoughts of not wanting to be here, and the second one needs real support right away. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, reach out now to a trusted person, a doctor, or a crisis line; in many places you can call or text a suicide and crisis line for immediate help. God meets us through people and care, not only through prayer. Asking for help is brave and right, and you do not have to carry this alone.
