A Prayer for Those in Chronic Pain
Pain that never fully stops changes a person. It wears down your patience, hijacks your sleep, and steals the ability to think about anything else when it flares. From the outside you may look fine, which makes it lonelier still, because people cannot see what is screaming inside your body. You have tried the medications, the specialists, the exercises, the things people keep suggesting as if you had not thought of them. Some days you just want one hour of relief. There is a particular despair in a body that hurts and hurts and does not stop, and God is not offended by that despair. He is close to it. Father, the pain is loud today and I am so tired of it. I cannot pray eloquently; I can barely think past this body. So I just come as I am, aching and worn thin. Be near me the way You promise to be near the brokenhearted, close enough that I am not alone in this. When the pain steals my sleep, be with me in the dark hours. When it steals my patience, forgive me and hold me together. Let Your grace be sufficient where my strength is long gone. And Father, I hold onto Your promise of a day when there will be no more pain, when every tear is wiped away. Until then, carry me. Be the strength of my heart when my flesh fails. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Pray this on the bad days and the slightly-better ones alike. When words are too much, let it be short: Lord, be near. Scripture promises He is nigh to the brokenhearted, and pain breaks the heart as surely as grief does. Let Paul's testimony meet you, that God's grace is sufficient and His strength is made perfect in weakness; this is not a demand that you feel strong, but a promise that His power rests where yours runs out. Jesus knew physical agony. The Gospels do not hide it; He suffered in His body, and He did not despise those who suffered in theirs. He touched the ones others avoided and never told them their pain was too much. He understands the way pain narrows the whole world to a single throbbing point. And He has promised that pain does not get the last word. On the day He makes all things new, there will be no more pain, no more crying, and the body that has fought you so long will finally be at rest. He is with you in the long night, and He is preparing a morning where this ends.

How can I pray when the pain is so bad I can't even focus?
You do not need focus or fine words. A single sentence counts: Lord, help me. A groan counts. Scripture says the Spirit helps us in our weakness and carries prayers we cannot even form. On the worst days, let others pray the words you cannot, and simply rest in the fact that God is near to the brokenhearted whether or not you can concentrate. He is not grading your prayer. He is holding you through it.
Is my chronic pain a punishment from God for something I did?
No. Pain is not God running a ledger against you. Jesus explicitly rejected the idea that suffering is proof of personal guilt. We live in a broken world where bodies break, and that is not the same as being condemned. If anything, Scripture places God especially near to those who hurt. Bring any shame or self-blame to Him; He wants to lift it, not add to it. Your pain is real, but it is not a sentence He handed down.
I'm losing hope that this will ever get better. What can I hold onto?
Hold onto the promise that this is not forever, even if it is for now. Scripture points to a day when God wipes away all tears and there is no more pain; that is not wishful thinking but the direction the whole story is heading. For today, hold onto His nearness and His grace that is sufficient for this one day. You do not have to summon hope for years at a time. Just let Him carry you through this hour, and then the next.
