A Prayer for Someone in the Hospital
Hospitals have a way of stripping everything down. The gown, the wristband, the beeping monitors, the interrupted sleep, the loss of control over your own body and schedule. Whether you are the patient lying in that bed, staring at ceiling tiles and waiting for the next round of tests, or the loved one who cannot bear to leave, hospitals are frightening places precisely because they are where our fragility becomes undeniable. The fear is worst at night, when the halls go quiet and your thoughts get loud. You do not have to face it alone, and you do not have to be strong. God is not kept out by hospital doors. Father, this bed is not where I wanted to be, and this fear is heavier at night. I bring my body, worn out and worried, into Your hands. Strengthen me here, the way Your Word promises You strengthen the one upon the bed of sickness. Steady the doctors and nurses; give them wisdom and skill and gentleness. Where healing can come, let it come. Where I must wait, keep me from despair. Quiet the fear that grips me when the halls go silent. Remind me that You are with me, that You will uphold me, that I am not alone in this room. And surround me with people who pray, who visit, who hold my hand. Into Your keeping I place this night and whatever tomorrow's tests may bring. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Scripture tells the sick to call for the elders of the church to pray over them, so do not hesitate to ask your pastor or Christian friends to come and pray; the prayer of faith, James says, matters. Let Psalm 41 comfort you with its promise that the Lord strengthens the one upon the bed of languishing. Cling to Isaiah's assurance that God is with you, will strengthen you, and will uphold you with the right hand of His righteousness. And be practical: let people visit, accept the help offered to your family, and if you are the caregiver, take turns so you do not collapse. No one should keep this vigil entirely alone.

Jesus was forever going to the bedsides of the sick. He took a feverish woman by the hand and lifted her up. He stood beside a dying girl and told her to arise. He was not repelled by illness or afraid of death, and He did not wait for people to come find Him; He went to them. He still comes to hospital rooms. When the machines beep through the night and you feel utterly alone, He is nearer than the nurse down the hall. He may heal in this life, or He may carry you through to a wholeness beyond it, but either way He is with you now, in this room, holding on to you.

Should I ask my pastor or church to come pray at the hospital?
Yes. Scripture actually instructs the sick to call for the elders of the church to come and pray over them. Most pastors consider hospital visits a sacred part of their calling and want to come; they would rather you ask than suffer in silence. Having believers pray at your bedside is a real comfort and a genuine means of grace. You are not imposing. Reach out, or have a family member reach out for you, and let the church do what it exists to do.
I'm terrified before my surgery or test results. How do I find peace?
Fear before surgery or hard news is completely human, and God does not scold you for it. Take Isaiah's promise into the waiting: He is with you, He will strengthen you, He will uphold you. Pray honestly about the fear rather than pretending it away. Ask a few people to pray with and for you in the hours beforehand. Peace may not mean the fear vanishes; often it means sensing God is with you inside the fear. He is present in that room, before, during, and after.
