A Prayer for Someone Who Hurt Me
Some wounds are hard to name out loud. Someone you trusted betrayed you, spoke words that still echo, or did something that changed your life without your consent. Forgiveness can feel impossible, even offensive, when the pain is fresh and the person may never apologize. This prayer is not about pretending it did not matter or letting them off the hook. It is about beginning the slow, honest work of releasing the poison so it stops controlling you. You do not have to feel ready. You only have to be willing to bring the hurt, and the person, to God. A prayer you can pray
Father, You saw what they did to me, and You know how deep it went. The hurt is real, and I will not pretend it away. But I am tired of carrying it, and I do not want bitterness to become who I am. So I bring this person to You. I cannot forgive in my own strength, so I ask You to help me forgive them, the way You have forgiven me in Christ. I let go of my right to make them pay, and I trust You to be the judge I could never be. Heal the wound they left. Where trust was broken, protect me and give me wisdom. Free my heart, Lord, and let me not be held captive any longer by what they did. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Forgiveness is usually a process, not a single moment, so pray this as often as you need to. Paul writes that we are to forgive one another as God in Christ forgave us, and that is the well you draw from; you forgive not because they earned it but because you have been forgiven much. Colossians says to forbear and forgive if you have a grievance against someone, just as Christ forgave you. Jesus connected our forgiving others to our own experience of the Father's forgiveness. And Paul offers relief for the part that longs for justice, telling us not to avenge ourselves but to leave room for God, who says vengeance is His; you can release the score-settling because He will handle it justly. Forgiving does not always mean reconciling or restoring trust, especially where harm was serious; seek wise counsel and safe boundaries as you heal.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus knows betrayal from the inside. A friend sold Him out for silver; another denied even knowing Him; the crowds that praised Him turned on Him within days. And still, from the cross, He asked the Father to forgive those who were killing Him. He does not stand over you demanding that you get past it quickly. He understands how much it costs, because it cost Him everything. When you bring the one who hurt you to Christ, you come to the One who was wounded and chose mercy, who offers to carry what you cannot, and who can heal a wound that no apology from them would ever be big enough to close.

How do I forgive someone who never apologized?
You can forgive without an apology, because forgiveness is something you do before God, not a transaction that requires their cooperation. Waiting for an apology that may never come only keeps you chained to them. Bring the hurt to God, release your right to revenge, and ask Him to heal you. This does not excuse what they did or mean you must trust them again. It means you refuse to let their unrepented wrong keep controlling your heart. That release is for your freedom.
Does forgiving someone mean I have to let them back into my life?
No. Forgiveness and reconciliation are different. Forgiveness is releasing the debt and giving up revenge; reconciliation requires the other person's repentance and changed behavior, and enough safety to rebuild trust. You can fully forgive someone and still keep firm boundaries, limit contact, or never restore the relationship, especially where there was abuse or ongoing harm. Ask God for wisdom about the relationship separately from the work of forgiving. Forgiving frees your heart; it does not require you to be unsafe.
Why should I forgive when they do not deserve it?
None of us forgive because it is deserved; we forgive because we have been forgiven far more than we could ever repay. Jesus tied our forgiving others to the mercy we have received from the Father. Forgiveness is less a gift to them than a release for you; carrying unforgiveness poisons your own life while often leaving them untouched. And you are not letting injustice win, because Scripture says vengeance belongs to God, who judges justly. You hand them over to a Judge far more capable than you.
