A prayer you can pray right now
A Prayer for My Brother
A brother is one of the first people you ever loved, and sometimes one of the hardest to reach. You share a history no one else has, the same kitchen table, the same parents, the same old arguments and inside jokes. Maybe he is thriving and you are proud of him. Maybe he is struggling and you feel helpless watching. Maybe distance or an old wound has grown between you and you miss him more than you say. Whatever stands between you today, you can still stand in the gap for him in prayer. Lift your brother to God, who has loved you both since before you were born.
“A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”Proverbs 17:17
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”Psalm 133:1
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”Isaiah 41:10
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”1 Thessalonians 5:11
A prayer you can pray
Father, I bring my brother to You today. Thank You for the years we have shared and the bond that no distance or disagreement can fully break. Watch over him in whatever he is facing right now. Strengthen him where he is weary, steady him where he is anxious, and remind him that he is not alone. Where things are strained between us, help me to love him well and to forgive freely. Give him work that has meaning, people who are good to him, and a heart that turns toward You. When trouble comes, be the friend who sticks closer than any other. Keep him safe today, and let him know he is loved. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray for your brother by name and by need. Proverbs says a brother is born for adversity, so be that presence for him and ask God to make you a steady one. Where you can, do more than pray; call him, show up, and comfort and edify him, as Paul urged the Thessalonians to do for one another. If your relationship is broken, pray for your own heart first, that you would be willing to make peace. Psalm 133 calls it good and pleasant when brethren dwell together in unity, and that unity often begins with one person quietly praying for it. When he is afraid, remember God's promise in Isaiah to uphold him and to say, fear thou not; carry that promise to your brother in prayer.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus called His followers His brothers, and He knew what it was to have brothers who did not understand Him. His own did not believe in Him at first, yet He never stopped loving them, and later they became some of His most devoted followers. So do not lose hope over a brother who seems far off. Christ is patient with slow hearts. When you pray for your brother, you pray to the One who understands complicated family love from the inside, who was betrayed and still forgave, who calls the wandering back gently. He is near to your brother even now, whether your brother knows it or not.

Questions people ask
How do I pray for a brother I am not on speaking terms with?
Start by praying for your own heart, not just his. Ask God to remove the bitterness before you ask Him to change your brother. Then pray for his good honestly, for his health, his peace, his relationship with God, even while things are broken between you. You do not have to feel warm toward him to pray truthfully for him. Reconciliation often begins in prayer long before it happens in person, and God can soften both hearts in His timing.
My brother is going down a destructive path. How do I pray?
Pray for his protection and for his eyes to open, but resist the urge to demand a specific outcome by a specific date. Ask God to surround him with people who tell him the truth, to let consequences do their gentle teaching, and to guard his life until he turns. Keep loving him in ways he can feel. You cannot save your brother, but you can keep entrusting him to the One who can, and that is not a small thing.
Should I tell my brother I am praying for him?
It depends on him. For some brothers, hearing it is a comfort and an open door. For others, it may feel like pressure or judgment. You can love him without announcing your prayers. Sometimes the quietest intercession does the deepest work. If you do tell him, keep it simple and warm, something like, I think about you and pray for you, rather than anything that sounds like a lecture.
