A Prayer for Hope
Hope can feel like a luxury when you are worn down. Maybe a season has dragged on longer than you thought you could bear, or one hard thing keeps stacking on another, and you have caught yourself bracing for disappointment because hoping hurts too much. Discouragement is heavy and quiet; it does not always announce itself, it just slowly dims the color out of things. But the hope Scripture speaks of is not wishful thinking or forced positivity. It is confidence anchored in the character of a God who does not fail, whose mercies are new every single morning. Even when you cannot feel it, that hope is real, and it can be renewed. Before despair convinces you the road only goes down, bring your weary heart to the God of hope.
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”Romans 15:13
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”Jeremiah 29:11
“They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:23
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”Isaiah 40:31
A prayer you can pray
Father, I am running low on hope. This season has worn me thin, and part of me has stopped expecting things to get better because it hurts to hope and be let down. Meet me here. You are the God of hope; fill me with joy and peace in believing, so that I abound in hope again, not by my own strength but by Your Spirit. Remind me that Your thoughts toward me are thoughts of peace, and not of evil, even when I cannot see the good You are working. When mornings feel like more of the same, let me remember that Your mercies are new every morning and great is Your faithfulness. Renew my strength when I am weary; hold me up when I want to give up. I do not need to see the whole way, only to trust that You are still good and still here. Lift my eyes. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
Pray this on the low days, and let it be the God of hope, not your own optimism, that you lean on. Paul prays that God would fill you with joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost, which locates hope's source outside yourself, in the Spirit. When the future looks bleak, Jeremiah gives you God's own perspective, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Lamentations, written in the middle of devastation, still finds a footing, they are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness, hope renewed one day at a time. And Isaiah promises strength to the depleted, they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength. Do not carry discouragement in secret; tell someone, let others hope on your behalf when your own runs dry. Hope is often rekindled in company.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus is the ground of a hope that outlasts any circumstance. He met people at the end of their rope, the woman who had spent everything on doctors with nothing to show, the father whose daughter had already died, the disciples in the boat certain they would drown, and He did not despise their fear or their fading hope. He walked into the worst thing, death itself, and came out the other side, which is why Christian hope is not naive; it has looked the darkness full in the face and found it defeated. Whatever has drained your hope, He is not undone by it, and He is nearer than your discouragement can tell you. He offers Himself as an anchor that holds when everything else gives way. In Him, the story is not over, even when it feels like it.

Questions people ask
How do I have hope when nothing is getting better?
Christian hope is not a prediction that circumstances will improve on your timeline; it is confidence in the character of a God who does not fail. So do not measure your hope by whether things have turned around yet. Anchor it instead in what is unchanging: His faithfulness, new every morning, and His thoughts of peace toward you. Take it one day at a time rather than trying to feel hopeful about the whole future at once. And lean on others; sometimes you borrow hope from people who can carry it when you cannot.
What's the difference between real hope and just forcing positivity?
Forced positivity denies the hard reality and pastes a smile over it, which eventually cracks. Real hope looks the hardship full in the face and still trusts God, not because everything is fine, but because He is faithful. It does not require pretending you feel good. Biblical hope is honest about grief, like Lamentations, which sits in devastation and still says great is thy faithfulness. You can name what is genuinely painful and hold onto God at the same time. That honesty is what makes the hope sturdy rather than brittle.
I've stopped hoping because I'm afraid of being let down again. Is that wrong?
It is not wrong; it is a wound, and a very human way to protect yourself from more pain. God is gentle with a heart that has been disappointed too many times. He does not scold you for guarding it. The hope He offers is different from the hopes that let you down, because it rests on Him rather than on outcomes. Start small, let Him prove faithful in little things, and let your hope be rebuilt slowly. He is patient, and He is worth trusting again, one day at a time.
