A Prayer for a New Month
The first of the month often slips past unnoticed, buried under bills, schedules, and the same worries you carried through the last one. But a new month is a small mercy worth pausing for. It is a chance to set down what did not go the way you hoped and to ask God for the weeks ahead before they fill up. Maybe last month drained you, or maybe it was good and you simply want to give thanks. Either way, you do not enter these next weeks alone or on your own strength. Before the calendar fills with appointments and the pressures start again, it is worth turning the page in prayer.
“It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”Lamentations 3:22
“They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”Lamentations 3:23
“And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.”Psalm 90:17
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”Isaiah 40:31
A prayer you can pray
Father, thank You for bringing me into a new month. I do not know all it will hold, but You already do, and I put it in Your hands. Thank You that it is of Your mercy that I am not consumed, that Your compassions have not failed me through everything the last month brought. Where I am starting this month weary, renew my strength. Establish the work of my hands, the tasks and duties ahead, and let something of Your beauty rest on my ordinary days. Provide what I need, week by week. Guard my family and the people I carry. Help me to wait on You rather than rush ahead of You. Meet me new every morning of these weeks. In the name of Jesus, amen.
How to pray this
A new month is a natural rhythm for prayer, a built in pause. Lamentations gives two anchors close together, that it is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, and that His compassions are new every morning. Read together, they say you survived last month by grace and you will meet fresh grace in this one. Psalm 90 offers a beautiful prayer for the weeks ahead, asking God to establish thou the work of our hands, which turns even mundane labor into something offered to Him. And when you feel you have nothing left to begin the month with, Isaiah promises that they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength. Consider writing down one or two things you are entrusting to God this month, then praying over them at the start of each week.
The One who hears this prayer
Jesus lived within the ordinary passage of days and seasons, teaching His friends to ask their Father for daily bread, one day's provision at a time. He did not promise a month without trouble, but He did promise His presence through it. When you hand Him the weeks ahead, you are trusting the One who calmed storms and multiplied bread, who sees the small and steady needs of your life. The strength Isaiah says God gives to those who wait is, finally, found in Him. As this month begins, He is not distant or watching from far off; He is near, ready to establish your steps and to renew you when the weeks grow long.

Questions people ask
Why should I pray at the start of a new month?
There is nothing sacred about the first of the month itself, but the rhythm is a gift. Pausing at the turn of the month lets you give thanks for what carried you through, release what did not go well, and offer the weeks ahead to God before they crowd with demands. It keeps you from drifting through your days on autopilot. Think of it less as a ritual you must perform and more as a regular appointment to reset your heart toward God.
What should I pray for at the beginning of the month?
Begin with thanks, naming specific mercies from the month behind you. Then bring the practical shape of the weeks ahead, work, finances, relationships, health, decisions, and ask God to establish and provide. Include the people you carry, and ask for strength where you feel depleted. You might also ask God to grow one particular thing in you this month, patience, gentleness, discipline, so the weeks form your character and not only fill your schedule.
I start every month behind and anxious. What can I pray?
Tell God exactly that. Anxiety at the start of a month often comes from staring at all the weeks at once. Scripture invites you to wait on the Lord and let Him renew your strength, and to receive mercy morning by morning rather than stockpiling it for the whole month. Take the weeks one at a time. If money or workload is the source of the dread, prayer and practical help belong together; consider asking a trusted friend or your church for support alongside your prayers.
