A Prayer After a Miscarriage

Psalm 34:18

The world often does not know how to grieve a baby who was never held, and that can make a miscarriage one of the loneliest sorrows there is. But your loss is real. You loved that child from the moment you knew, you imagined a whole life, and now there is an ache where a future used to be. There may be guilt that has no basis, questions with no answers, and people who mean well but say the wrong thing or nothing at all. Your grief is not an overreaction, and your baby mattered. God is not distant from this kind of sorrow; He is close to it in a way few others can be. Bring your broken heart, and the child you have already loved and lost, to the God who is near to the brokenhearted.

“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”Psalm 34:18

“But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.”2 Samuel 12:23

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”Revelation 21:4

“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”Matthew 5:4

A prayer you can pray

Father, my heart is broken over the child I never got to hold. I loved this baby already, and now there is an emptiness where a whole life should have been. You know the grief no one else fully sees, the questions I cannot answer, the guilt that keeps whispering even though I know I could not have stopped this. Draw near to me the way You promise to draw near to the brokenhearted. Hold me in this loss. Comfort me in my mourning, as You promise comfort to those who mourn. I entrust my little one entirely to You, into hands more tender than my own. And I hold onto the promise of a day with no more tears, no more sorrow, no more death, when every broken thing is made whole. Until then, sit with me in this grief. In the name of Jesus, amen.

How to pray this

Pray this gently, and give yourself full permission to grieve; there is no timeline you owe anyone. Let the promise anchor you that the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. Jesus Himself said, blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted; your grief is not something to hide but something He meets. When you long to know where your child is, David's quiet words about his own lost baby, I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me, have comforted grieving parents for centuries with the hope of reunion. And hold onto Revelation's promise of the day God wipes away all tears, with no more death or sorrow or pain. Practically: let people grieve with you, name your baby if you wish, and lean on your partner, your church, and, if it helps, others who have walked this road.

The One who hears this prayer

Jesus never dismissed grief, and He never turned children away. He took little ones in His arms and blessed them, and He rebuked those who tried to keep them from Him. He wept at the grave of someone He loved, standing in solidarity with mourners even knowing resurrection was coming. He said the mourning are blessed and will be comforted, which means your tears are not invisible to Him. Your child is not lost to the God who holds all His little ones. In Christ there is the hope of a day when death is undone and every tear is wiped away, when what was taken too soon is restored. He is near to your broken heart now, and He is holding your baby safe.

Questions people ask

Where is my baby now? Will I ever see my child again?

Many Christians hold, with deep hope, that a little one lost this way is safe in God's tender care. When King David lost his infant son, he spoke with quiet confidence, I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me, trusting he would one day be reunited with his child. God's mercy toward the smallest and most helpless is beyond our fear. While Scripture does not spell out every detail, it points steadily to a God who gathers His little ones and to a reunion beyond this life.

Was this my fault? Could I have done something to prevent it?

Almost always, no. The overwhelming majority of miscarriages happen for reasons entirely outside a parent's control, and nothing you did or failed to do caused this. The guilt that whispers otherwise is real but it is not the truth. If it helps, ask your doctor to walk you through what happened; understanding often eases the self-blame. Bring the guilt to God, who knows you could not have stopped this, and let Him lift the weight you were never meant to carry.

People act like it wasn't a real loss. How do I grieve when no one understands?

Your loss is real, and you are allowed to grieve it fully, no matter how others treat it. The bond and the hopes you had for your child were real, so the grief is real too. You do not need anyone's permission to mourn. Seek out those who do understand, whether your partner, a compassionate friend, your church, or others who have lost a baby the same way and can grieve alongside you. And bring the loneliness of it to God, who is near to the brokenhearted and never once minimizes your sorrow.
