A Prayer for a Difficult Person in My Life

Romans 12:18

There is someone whose name tightens your stomach when it appears on your phone. Maybe it is a coworker who takes credit, a relative who cuts you down, a neighbor with a grievance, or a friend who has turned cold. You have replayed conversations in the shower, rehearsed the perfect comeback, and lost sleep you cannot get back. Praying for this person feels almost impossible, because part of you does not want them blessed, you want them to finally understand what they have done. That honesty is welcome here. God would rather have your real, conflicted prayer than a polished one. Bring this difficult person to Him exactly as things stand.

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”Romans 12:18

“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”Proverbs 15:1

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”Matthew 5:44

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”Colossians 3:13

A prayer you can pray

Father, You know the person I am thinking of, and You know what they stir up in me. I am tired of carrying the anger, the replayed arguments, the wish that they would just change. I cannot make them kinder, and I cannot make myself stop caring what they think. So I hand them to You. Where they have wronged me, You see it clearly, and I trust You with the justice I keep trying to grab. Soften my words when I have to speak to them. Guard me from becoming bitter, from becoming like the thing that hurts me. Do something in them I cannot do. And do something in me, so that this person no longer rules my peace. In the name of Jesus, amen.

How to pray this

Praying for a difficult person is less about feelings changing overnight and more about refusing to let resentment set. Jesus said plainly to love your enemies and pray for those who use you, which means prayer for this person is not optional and not a reward they earned; it is medicine for you. Proverbs teaches that a soft answer turns away wrath while harsh words only feed the fire, so ask God for that soft answer before your next hard conversation. Paul urges us to forbear and forgive one another, remembering how much we ourselves have been forgiven. You are not asked to pretend the hurt is small or to make yourself available for more harm. You are asked to keep your heart from hardening, and to let God carry the weight of setting things right.

The One who hears this prayer

Jesus was betrayed by a friend, denied by another, and mocked by the very people He came to save, and He did not curse them. From the cross He asked the Father to forgive. He is not a stranger to being wronged by someone close, so when you bring this difficult person to Him, you are talking to the One who understands the sting completely. He does not tell you the offense was nothing. He offers to carry it with you, to be your defender so you can lay down the exhausting job of defending yourself. Turning to Him will not always change the other person quickly, but it can free you from being defined by them, and He can give your heart back its rest.

Questions people ask

How can I pray for someone who hurt me when I do not want them blessed?

Begin exactly there, and tell God the truth: that part of you wants them to suffer, not to flourish. He can handle that. The willingness to pray at all, even through gritted teeth, is God working in you. Over time, asking Him to deal with them lets you release the job of punishing them, which is the very thing keeping you bound. You do not have to feel warm to obey; feelings often follow the prayer rather than lead it.

Do I have to keep this person in my life to forgive them?

Forgiveness and access are two different things. Forgiveness means releasing your right to revenge and handing the debt to God; it is something you can do in your own heart even from a distance. Whether to stay in close contact depends on whether the relationship is safe and whether the person keeps causing harm. You can forgive a person and still put wise limits on the relationship. If someone is dangerous or abusive, protecting yourself is not unforgiveness.

What if praying for them makes me feel like I am excusing what they did?

It does not. Praying entrusts the wrong to a God who sees it more clearly than you do and who takes justice seriously. You are not calling the harm acceptable; you are refusing to let it turn you bitter while you wait for God to deal with it His way. Naming the offense honestly in prayer is the opposite of excusing it. You are handing it to the only Judge who can weigh it perfectly.
