A Prayer for the First Day of School
The backpack is packed, the shoes are by the door, and tomorrow is the first day of school. Whether this prayer is for your own nervous stomach or for a child you are about to send off, first days are big. New classrooms, new teachers, the question of who to sit with at lunch, the hope of being liked and the fear of not being. For a parent, watching a child walk toward those doors can bring its own lump to the throat. There is so much you cannot control once that bell rings. But the God who has watched over this child every day of their life does not stay behind at the school gate. Before the alarm goes off, bring the nerves, the hopes, and the whole new year to Him.

A prayer you can pray
Father, tomorrow is the first day, and there are butterflies and big feelings. Whether I am praying for myself or for a child I love, go with them into that school. You tell Your people to be strong and of good courage, to not be afraid, because You are with them wherever they go, so be with them in the classroom, the hallway, and the lunchroom. Calm the nervous stomach. Help them make a friend, find their classroom, and feel that they belong. Give them courage to try, kindness toward the lonely kid, and grace when things go wrong. Bless the teachers who will spend the year with them; give them patience and wisdom. Fear thou not, You promise, for You will uphold them; so uphold every child walking through those doors tomorrow. Give them a good first day, and give the parents peace. In the name of Jesus, amen.

And Isaiah's tender word, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee," is worth teaching a child to carry into the classroom. Scripture also reminds us that "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge," so pray that this year of learning would be rooted in reverence for God, not just grades.
