Bible Verses for a Funeral
Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things we do. Grief is love with nowhere to go, and it is right to weep. But for those in Christ, the grave is not the end of the story. These verses are for a funeral, for comfort in the sorrow and hope beyond it.
What God says over a funeral
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
Jesus is the resurrection and the life; the believer shall live even if they die.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, God is with us.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Neither death nor life can separate us from the love of God in Christ.
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”

“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”

Where this all leads
Jesus wept at a grave before He conquered the grave. He has been through death and out the other side, and He holds the keys. For everyone who trusts Him, a funeral is not a final goodbye but a 'see you soon.' Your grief is real, and so is the hope: because He lives, those who are His will live also.

Lord, my heart is heavy with loss. Comfort me and all who grieve today. Thank You that death is not the end for those who trust You. Hold the one we have lost, and hold us. Turn our mourning into hope, and one day into joy. In Jesus name, amen.
