Is It a Sin to Masturbate?

Matthew 5:28

The Bible never directly addresses masturbation, so there is no verse that names it a sin, and honesty requires saying so. What Scripture does speak to is lust, the fantasies that often accompany it, and being mastered by a compulsion. So the real question is usually the heart and the habit, met with grace, not shame.

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”Matthew 5:28

“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”1 Corinthians 6:12

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”Romans 8:1

What Scripture actually says

There is no proof-text on masturbation itself; the passage sometimes cited about Onan concerns something else entirely. So it is honest to admit the Bible is silent on the act. What it is not silent about is lust: Jesus said that looking on another to lust after them is adultery in the heart. Scripture also warns against being brought under the power of anything and calls believers to purity of mind. Those are the honest issues, the fantasies attached to it and whether it has become a compulsion, rather than a named ban.

Grace, not a scorecard

So please set down the crushing shame, because shame is fuel, not freedom. For many, especially those wrestling with pornography or lust, this is tangled up with real struggle, and Jesus meets that struggle with mercy, not contempt. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ. If it has become a compulsion or is bound to lustful images, that is worth bringing honestly into the light, to God and perhaps to a trusted, safe person. Not to be scolded, but to be helped and freed. You are not disgusting; you are loved.

This is really about Jesus

The pull is often less about desire and more about comfort, escape, or feeling wanted, real hungers that were made for something deeper than a moment alone. Jesus offers to meet the actual ache: to be loved, to matter, to be at peace. He does not stand across the room from your struggle; He steps into it. Grace is not permission to keep going; it is the power to change, because you are finally loved enough to have nothing to prove.

Questions people ask

Does the Bible say masturbation is a sin?

The Bible never directly addresses it, so there is no verse naming it a sin. The passage about Onan is about something else. What Scripture does address is lust (Matthew 5:28) and being mastered by a compulsion (1 Corinthians 6:12). So the honest issues are the heart and the habit, not a named ban.

Why do I feel so much shame about it?

Much of that shame is heavier than anything Scripture places on you, and shame tends to trap rather than free. God meets struggle with mercy, not contempt (Romans 8:1). If it is bound up with lust or has become compulsive, bring it honestly into the light. You are not disgusting; you are loved.

What if it is tied to pornography or lust?

Then that is the deeper issue worth addressing, gently and with help. Lust and porn are engineered to hook, and freedom usually comes through honesty, community, and Jesus meeting the real hunger underneath. There is no condemnation for you in Christ, only a hand reaching to help you toward freedom.
