Is It a Sin to Gamble?

1 Timothy 6:10

The Bible never uses the word gambling, so there is no verse that names it a sin. What Scripture warns about, sharply, is the love of money, the greed that treats chance as a savior, and the harm it does. So the honest answer is: not automatically, but it very easily becomes a doorway to real bondage and ruin.

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”1 Timothy 6:10

“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”Hebrews 13:5

“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.”Proverbs 13:11

What Scripture actually says

Because gambling as we know it is not addressed directly, honesty means admitting there is no clear ban. But the Bible speaks pointedly to the heart behind it. It calls the love of money a root of much sorrow, urges contentment because God has promised never to leave us, and says wealth gotten by vanity dwindles while steady work builds. Gambling trades on the very craving Scripture warns against: the hope that the next win will finally satisfy, when only God can.

Grace, not a scorecard

So this is less about a rule and more about what has a hold on you. A raffle for a good cause is not the issue; chasing losses, hiding statements, and betting money your family needs is. If gambling has become a compulsion, hear this clearly: that is not proof you are weak or bad, it is a trap engineered to feel like it is about to pay off precisely when it is taking the most. There is no shame in that, and there is real help, and God is far more eager to free you than to scold you.

This is really about Jesus

Underneath the bet is usually a hunger for security, excitement, or escape, and Jesus offers the real thing the jackpot only imitates. He points to a Father who already knows what you need and has promised to supply it, and to a treasure no loss can wipe out. He is not against your security; He is offering a foundation the next spin cannot crash. Confession is the door out, and behind it is mercy, not a lecture.

Questions people ask

Is gambling a sin according to the Bible?

The Bible never uses the word, so there is no direct ban. It warns sharply about the love of money and the sorrow it brings (1 Timothy 6:10), and calls us to trust God rather than chance. More urgent than the label is the harm: if it is hurting you and those you love, that is real, and God wants to free you from it.

Is buying a lottery ticket or a raffle the same thing?

Not necessarily. A small raffle for a good cause is different from chasing losses or betting money you need. Scripture speaks to the heart and the harm, not to a category. Weigh honestly whether it is feeding greed or escapism, and whether you can truly afford to lose what you stake.

I am in debt from gambling. Where do I start?

Start by telling one trustworthy person and getting practical help, a counselor, a support group, cutting off access. God is not distant from the practical steps; He often works through them. And bring the fear to Him; He has promised to supply what you genuinely need. Mercy, not perfection, is the entry point.
