Is It a Sin to Marry a Non-Christian?

2 Corinthians 6:14

Scripture urges believers to marry within the faith and warns against being unequally yoked, so it is honest counsel to say marrying a non-Christian goes against that guidance. Yet if you are already married to someone who does not share your faith, the Bible does not tell you to leave; it calls you to love them well and keep the door open with grace.

“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?”2 Corinthians 6:14

“The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.”1 Corinthians 7:39

“For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.”1 Corinthians 7:14

What Scripture actually says

Paul told the Corinthians that a believer is free to marry only in the Lord, and warned against being unequally yoked with unbelievers, because marriage is the closest yoke of all, one flesh, one shared direction. But the very same letter speaks tenderly to those already married across that line: do not leave, for the believing spouse can be a means of grace to the household. So Scripture holds two things at once: wise counsel before marriage, and steadfast love and hope within a marriage already made.

Grace, not a scorecard

So if you are considering it, weigh the warning honestly and prayerfully, not out of fear but out of love for your own walk with God and the life you hope to build together. And if you are already in such a marriage, hear this clearly: you are not living in sin, and you are not called to abandon your spouse. You are called to love them faithfully, to let your quiet, genuine faith be a witness, and to entrust their heart to God, who loves them even more than you do. There is no shame here, only grace and hope.

This is really about Jesus

Jesus is able to reach the person you love, and He often does so through the steady, unforced faith of a spouse who keeps loving well. He is not standing over your marriage in judgment; He is at work in it. Whether you are deciding or already committed, bring it to Him. Keep Him first in your own heart, love your spouse the way He loves His people, and trust the outcome to the God who saves.

Questions people ask

Is it a sin to marry a non-Christian?

Scripture urges believers to marry within the faith and warns against being unequally yoked (2 Corinthians 6:14; 1 Corinthians 7:39). So it goes against biblical counsel. But if you are already married across that line, the Bible does not call it sin to stay; it calls you to love your spouse faithfully.

I am already married to a non-believer. Should I leave?

No. Paul specifically addressed this and said do not leave; the believing spouse can be a means of grace in the home (1 Corinthians 7:14). You are not living in sin. Love your spouse well, let your faith be a gentle witness, and entrust their heart to God.

Can my faith reach my spouse?

God is able, and He often works through the steady, genuine love of a believing spouse rather than through pressure. Keep Jesus first in your own heart, love faithfully, and pray. The outcome belongs to God, who loves your spouse even more than you do. There is real hope here.
