Is It a Sin to Judge Others?

Matthew 7:1

Jesus did warn, judge not, but He was not forbidding all moral discernment; He was condemning the hypocritical, condemning spirit that looks down on others while ignoring one's own faults. Scripture calls us to judge righteously and humbly, not harshly. The sin is not caring about right and wrong; it is playing God over another person's heart.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”Matthew 7:1

“Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”Matthew 7:5

“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”John 7:24

What Scripture actually says

Jesus said judge not, that ye be not judged, and immediately explained: first take the beam out of your own eye, then you will see clearly to help your brother with the speck in his. So the target is hypocrisy, not all discernment. Elsewhere Jesus said, judge righteous judgment, and Paul expected believers to make wise moral assessments. The Bible forbids the arrogant, condemning judgment that assumes the worst and appoints itself as another's final judge, while it commends humble, honest discernment that is quick to examine itself first.

Grace, not a scorecard

So this cuts against two errors at once. It rebukes the harsh, superior spirit that delights in condemning others, remember, with what measure you use, it will be measured to you. But it does not mean you must pretend nothing is ever wrong or that all views are equal. The freeing part is humility: because you know your own need for mercy, you can speak truth gently, assume the best you honestly can, and leave final verdicts to God, who alone sees the heart. Grace received makes us slow to condemn and quick to understand.

This is really about Jesus

Jesus is the one Person entitled to judge, and yet He came the first time not to condemn but to save. He looked on crowds who deserved judgment and felt compassion. When you grasp how much mercy He has shown you, the impulse to look down on others loses its power, and you begin to treat people the way He treated you: honestly about sin, but generous with grace. His mercy toward you is meant to overflow as mercy toward everyone else.

Questions people ask

Did Jesus say never to judge anyone?

He said judge not, but the context targets hypocrisy: remove the beam from your own eye first (Matthew 7:5). He also said to judge righteous judgment (John 7:24). So He forbids the arrogant, condemning spirit, not all moral discernment done humbly and with self-examination.

Is it wrong to believe some things are sinful?

No. Recognizing right and wrong is not the sin Jesus condemned. The sin is a superior, condemning attitude that appoints itself as another's final judge while ignoring its own faults. You can hold moral convictions and still be humble, gentle, and merciful toward people.

How do I speak truth without being judgmental?

Start with humility about your own need for mercy, then speak gently, assuming the best you honestly can, and leave final verdicts to God, who alone sees the heart (Matthew 7:1). Grace you have received should make you slow to condemn and quick to understand others.
