What Does the Bible Say About Judging Others?

Jesus warns clearly against a critical, hypocritical spirit that judges others while ignoring our own faults, telling us to remove the beam from our own eye first. Scripture calls us to mercy rather than condemnation, while still using discernment about right and wrong. The Bible forbids self-righteous judgment, not honest, humble truth spoken in love.

Jesus is not forbidding all moral discernment; elsewhere he tells us to judge righteously. What he condemns is the proud habit of condemning others while excusing ourselves, and the assumption that we can see hearts as God does.

The cure is humility: dealing honestly with our own faults first, extending the mercy we ourselves need, and, where we do speak truth, doing it gently and for the person's good rather than to feel superior.

The deepest answer is Jesus

Jesus, who alone had the right to condemn, came not to condemn the world but to save it, and he calls us to give the mercy we have received.
