Is It a Sin to Hold a Grudge?

Ephesians 4:31

Yes, the Bible treats holding a grudge, nursing bitterness and refusing to forgive, as sin, but always with your freedom in view. Unforgiveness is a weight that harms the carrier most. God calls you to release it not to excuse the wrong, but to free your own heart, the way He has freely forgiven you.

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:”Ephesians 4:31

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”Ephesians 4:32

“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”Colossians 3:13

What Scripture actually says

Paul says, let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger be put away from you, and then gives the reason: be kind one to another, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you. Colossians echoes it: forbearing one another, and forgiving, even as Christ forgave you. The pattern is always the same. Forgiveness is not pretending the offense did not happen or that it did not hurt; it is choosing to release the debt into God's hands rather than clutching it. Scripture treats a nursed grudge as a spiritual poison, and forgiveness as the antidote.

Grace, not a scorecard

So if you are carrying a grudge, understand first that the hurt behind it may be very real, and God does not dismiss it. But bitterness is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to suffer; it mostly corrodes you. Releasing it is not saying the wrong was okay, and it is not always the same as reconciliation, which sometimes is not safe or possible. It is handing the debt to God, who judges rightly, so you no longer have to carry it. And when you struggle to let go, His grace and help are there.

This is really about Jesus

The engine of forgiveness is not willpower but the mercy you yourself have received. Jesus forgave a debt against you that you could never repay, absorbing the cost at the cross. When that sinks in, releasing others becomes not just a command but a natural overflow. He does not ask you to forgive from your own thin reserves, but out of the ocean of grace He has poured into you. As you keep receiving His mercy, the grudges you have clenched for years can finally open into freedom.

Questions people ask

Is holding a grudge a sin?

Yes. Scripture calls believers to put away bitterness and forgive as God forgave them (Ephesians 4:31-32; Colossians 3:13). A nursed grudge is treated as spiritual poison. But God calls you to release it for your own freedom, not to excuse the wrong that was done to you.

Does forgiving mean the wrong was okay?

No. Forgiveness is not pretending the offense did not happen or did not hurt. It is releasing the debt into God's hands rather than clutching it, trusting Him to judge rightly. It frees your heart from a weight that mostly harms you, without declaring the harm acceptable.

Is forgiveness the same as reconciliation?

Not always. You can forgive, releasing the debt to God, even when reconciliation is unsafe or impossible. Forgiveness is a matter of your own heart; reconciliation requires the other person and sometimes wisdom about safety. God calls you to forgive; He does not require you to return to harm.
