Bible Verses for Widows
The person you shared your life with is gone, and the silence is loud. Grief comes in waves, and the practical weight is real too. These verses are for the widow or widower who needs to know that God has a special tenderness for you, and that you are not alone.
What God says over widows and widowers
“A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
God is a father to the fatherless and a defender of widows.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
“For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.”
Your Maker is your husband; the Lord of hosts is His name.
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
God calls His people to visit widows; you are His concern, not forgotten.
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
“He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.”
He executes justice for the widow and loves the stranger.
“Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”
The Father of mercies and God of all comfort will comfort you.
“The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.”
The Lord relieves the widow and upholds those who are bowed down.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
A day is coming when God wipes every tear and death is no more.
Where this all leads
Jesus stopped a funeral to raise a widow's only son, moved with compassion at her grief. He sees you the same way. He promises to be a husband to the one who has lost one, and He has conquered the very death that took your beloved. Your grief is safe with Him, and reunion is real for those who are in Christ.

A prayer for widows and widowers
Lord, You are near to the brokenhearted, and my heart is broken. Comfort me in the waves of grief and the quiet of an empty house. Be my provider, my defender, and my companion. Hold my beloved, and hold me. Carry me until the day You wipe every tear. In Jesus name, amen.
You were never meant to walk this alone

- What is a good Bible verse for a widow?
- Psalm 68:5 ('a father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows') and Isaiah 54:5 ('thy Maker is thine husband') are deeply comforting, along with Psalm 34:18 for a broken heart.
- Does God care about widows?
- Very much. Scripture repeatedly calls God the defender of widows (Psalm 68:5, Psalm 146:9), commands His people to care for them (James 1:27), and Jesus showed tender compassion to a grieving widow in Luke 7.
