Bible Verses for the Dying
These are tender, holy days. Whether the news is yours or someone you love, the end of a life is not the end of the story for those who are in Christ. These verses are for the one facing death who needs to know what waits on the other side, and Who.
What God says over those who are dying
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
Jesus is the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in Him shall live.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”
Though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, He is with you.
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
Jesus has gone to prepare a place, and He will come to receive you.
“We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”
To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
God shall wipe away all tears; no more death, sorrow, or pain.
“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Neither death nor life can separate you from the love of God in Christ.
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
For to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
“So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
Death is swallowed up in victory; O death, where is your sting?
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Fear not, for I am with you, even here; I will uphold you.
Where this all leads
Jesus died and rose so that death would become a door, not a wall. He has been through it ahead of you and holds the keys. To everyone who trusts Him, dying is not falling into the dark but falling into the arms of the One who loves you and has prepared a home. You can face this held by Him.

A prayer for those who are dying
Lord Jesus, You conquered death, so I do not have to fear it. Hold me and my loved ones in these days. Take away my fear, forgive my sins, and receive me to Yourself when the time comes. Thank You for the place You have prepared. Into Your hands I commit my spirit. Amen.
