Is It a Sin to Want to Be Rich?

1 Timothy 6:9

Wanting to provide well and prosper is not sin, but Scripture warns pointedly against the craving to be rich, because that longing has a way of enslaving the heart and crowding out God. The issue is not money itself but where your hope and security are anchored. Seek God first, and the rest finds its proper place.

“But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”1 Timothy 6:9

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”1 Timothy 6:10

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”Matthew 6:33

What Scripture actually says

Paul warned that they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, and added the famous line: the love of money is the root of all evil. Notice it is the love of money, the craving, not money itself, that he indicts. Jesus said no one can serve two masters, God and wealth, and told people to seek first the kingdom of God, promising that their genuine needs would be provided. The Bible does not condemn earning or provision; it warns against letting the desire for riches become the thing you truly worship.

Grace, not a scorecard

So examine the heart honestly rather than just the bank account. It is good to work hard, provide for your family, and even prosper; Scripture blesses diligence. The danger is the inner tilt, when money becomes the measure of your worth, the source of your security, the thing you cannot stop chasing. That craving never satisfies; it always whispers that a little more will finally be enough. God is not against your flourishing; He is offering you a security that wealth can never provide and freedom from a hunger that would otherwise own you.

This is really about Jesus

Jesus offers the one treasure that does not fail and a Father who already knows what you need. When your security rests in Him, the desperate craving for riches loses its grip, and money becomes a tool for love and generosity rather than a god you serve. He does not merely warn you off greed; He fills the emptiness underneath it with Himself. Seek Him first, and you will find that what your heart was really reaching for was never money at all.
