Is It a Sin to Cut Off a Family Member?
Cutting off a family member is not automatically a sin, though the Bible calls us to pursue peace and honor family wherever we can. Scripture is also honest that some relationships are harmful, and it does not require you to stay in reach of ongoing abuse or destruction. Boundaries, even distance, can be wise and loving; the heart behind them is what matters most.

What Scripture actually says
Paul writes, if it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men, which both urges peace and quietly admits it is not always possible and not always up to you. Proverbs counsels, make no friendship with an angry man, recognizing that some relationships form us badly. Jesus even acknowledged that following Him would sometimes divide households. So Scripture holds together a strong call to honor and reconcile family with a clear-eyed realism that some relationships are genuinely harmful. It does not command you to keep exposing yourself to abuse in the name of family loyalty.
Grace, not a scorecard
So this is not a simple yes or no, and it must never be used to shame someone protecting themselves or their children. There is a real difference between cutting someone off out of unforgiveness or convenience and stepping back from ongoing abuse, manipulation, or danger. Forgiveness is always commanded; unlimited access is not. You can forgive a person, releasing them to God, while still keeping a boundary for safety or sanity. If you are estranged from family, whatever the reason, you are not automatically in sin, and God is near to you in the grief and complexity of it.
This is really about Jesus
Jesus understands broken family relationships from the inside; even His own relatives once misunderstood Him. He offers to be the family that never fails and to give you wisdom for the painful decisions estrangement involves. He can hold both truths at once in you: a heart that forgives and prays for reconciliation, and the discernment to keep a boundary where love and safety require it. Bring the whole tangled situation to Him. He does not offer easy formulas, but He offers His presence, His wisdom, and a belonging that no earthly estrangement can take from you.
