Grace and truth, honestly

Is It a Sin to Be Angry?

Ephesians 4:26

No, anger itself is not automatically a sin. The Bible even says, be angry, and sin not, and it shows God and Jesus feeling righteous anger. What Scripture warns against is anger that lingers into bitterness or explodes into harm. Anger is often a signal; the question is what you do with it.

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:”Ephesians 4:26

“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:”James 1:19

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:”Ephesians 4:31

What Scripture actually says

Paul wrote, be angry, and sin not, and added, let not the sun go down upon your wrath, which assumes anger will come but must not be nursed. James says to be slow to wrath. Jesus Himself was angry at hardness of heart and at the exploitation in the temple, showing that anger at genuine wrong can be right. But the Bible also says to put away wrath, malice, and bitterness, because anger left to fester turns corrosive. So the line is not feeling anger, but harboring it or letting it drive you to sin.

Grace, not a scorecard

So do not condemn yourself simply for feeling angry, especially when something truly wrong has stirred it. Anger often points to something that matters, an injustice, a hurt, a boundary crossed. The danger comes when it curdles into resentment you carry for days, or erupts in words and actions that wound. There is grace here: when your anger has led you into sin, forgiveness is full and immediate, and God patiently helps you learn to feel it honestly, express it wisely, and release it rather than let it master you.

This is really about Jesus

Jesus felt anger without ever being ruled by it, and He offers to reshape yours the same way. He can heal the wounds underneath it, give you the patience to be slow to wrath, and free you from the resentments you have carried too long. As you bring your anger to Him honestly, He turns what could destroy you into something that can motivate justice and love instead. He is not shocked by your anger; He wants to redeem it.

Questions people ask

Is being angry a sin?

Not automatically. Scripture says be angry, and sin not (Ephesians 4:26), and shows Jesus feeling righteous anger. The sin is in what anger becomes: bitterness nursed over time, or wrath that erupts into harm. Anger at genuine wrong can even be right. What matters is what you do with it.

When does anger become sinful?

When it lingers into resentment (let not the sun go down on your wrath, Ephesians 4:26) or drives you to wound others in word or action (Ephesians 4:31). Anger that festers or explodes is the danger, not the initial feeling that something is wrong.

How do I handle anger in a godly way?

Feel it honestly, be slow to act (James 1:19), and bring it to God rather than nursing or unleashing it. Let Him heal the wound underneath and give patience. When anger has led you into sin, receive full forgiveness. God can redeem anger into a force for justice and love.
