What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
Being born again is a phrase Jesus Himself used, and it can sound strange until you see what He meant. He was not talking about anything physical or eerie. He was describing a real spiritual beginning: a life so new it is like being born all over again, this time into God's family, with a new heart and a new relationship with Him. It is not about turning over a new leaf or trying harder to be good. It is about receiving a new life from God that you could never produce yourself. And it happens the moment a person truly comes to Christ.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”John 3:3
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”John 3:16
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”2 Corinthians 5:17
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”Titus 3:5
The good news, plainly
Jesus said to a religious leader named Nicodemus, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus was confused, thinking of physical birth, but Jesus meant a birth from above, a work of God's Spirit. You are born again not by your own effort or bloodline or good behavior, but by God's mercy, through faith in Jesus. It is His doing, given to everyone who receives Christ. In other words, being born again is not something you achieve; it is something you are given when you come to Him.
What this means for you
To be born again is to become, as Scripture puts it, a new creature: old things are passed away, all things are become new. It does not mean you instantly stop struggling or that your personality changes; it means the deepest thing about you has changed. You now have God's own life within you, His Spirit living in you, a new capacity to love, to know God, and to grow. Like any newborn, you start small and grow over time. But the family you are born into is God's, the Father you now have is good, and the life you have received does not end. It is everlasting.
Come to him now
You cannot give birth to yourself, and that is the good news. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, the Bible says, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost. Being born again is God's gift through Jesus, who died and rose so that His resurrection life could become yours. So you do not have to manufacture a new heart by willpower. You come to Christ, and He makes you new from the inside. The One who called Lazarus out of the grave is more than able to give you life that begins now and never ends.

Questions people ask
Is being born again different from being a Christian?
No, they describe the same reality. To become a Christian is to be born again, given new spiritual life by God when you trust Jesus. The phrase simply highlights that this is a real new beginning, God's work in you, not merely a change of opinion or behavior.
Do I have to have a dramatic experience to be born again?
No. Some people can name the exact moment; others simply know they have come to trust Jesus over time. The new birth is God's work, not a required feeling or fireworks. What matters is that you have received Christ, not how emotional the moment was.
How do I get born again?
You come to Jesus in faith, trusting that He died and rose for you, and you turn from your own way to follow Him. The new birth itself is God's gift through His Spirit. Ask Him honestly, receive Christ, and He does the making-new.
