How Do I Know If I Am Saved?
It is one of the most common questions among people who have come to Jesus, and asking it does not mean something is wrong with you. Assurance of salvation is not meant to rest on how you feel from day to day, because feelings rise and fall for a hundred reasons. It rests on something far steadier: God's promises and Christ's finished work. The Bible actually wants you to know, with settled confidence, that you belong to Him. So this is not a question you are supposed to leave forever unsure about. You can have real assurance, and it is grounded in Him, not in your fluctuating emotions.
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”1 John 5:13
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”John 5:24

The good news, plainly
The apostle John wrote his letter for exactly this reason: these things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life. That ye may know. Assurance is God's gift, not spiritual arrogance. And the ground of it is a promise: Jesus said that whoever hears His word and believes on the Father who sent Him has everlasting life, and has already passed from death unto life. Notice the tense: has, and already passed. If you have trusted Christ, your salvation is not a maybe you must anxiously guard; it is a gift He has already given.
What this means for you
So how do you know? First and mainly, by resting on the promise: if you have truly turned to Jesus and are trusting Him, He has said you are His, and He does not lie. Second, God gives quieter confirmations over time, a growing love for Him, a new discomfort with sin, a care for other people, His Spirit bearing witness within you. These are not tests you must pass to earn assurance; they are the fruit that naturally grows in a life that has been made new. And when doubt comes, as it will, you do not respond by trying harder to feel saved. You return to the promise and to the Savior who gave it.
Come to him now
Your deepest assurance is not the strength of your grip on Jesus but the strength of His grip on you. I give unto them eternal life, He said of His sheep, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. Your Father, He added, is greater than all, and no one is able to pluck them out of His hand. That is where your security lives: in two nail-scarred hands that will not let go. So if you have come to Christ, you can stop white-knuckling your salvation and rest. He who began a good work in you has promised to finish it.

Questions people ask
I do not always feel saved. Does that mean I am not?
No. Feelings are not the foundation of assurance; God's promise is. If you have trusted Jesus, He says you have eternal life, whether or not you feel it on a given day. Return to His Word rather than to your mood, and let the promise steady you.
Can I be sure, or is that presumptuous?
The Bible says God wrote so that you may know you have eternal life. Assurance grounded in Christ's promise is not arrogance; it is taking God at His word. It becomes presumption only if it rests on your own goodness rather than on His grace.
What if I keep sinning after coming to Jesus?
Every believer still struggles, and stumbling does not cancel your salvation; it is why grace exists. What matters is the direction of your heart, that you keep turning back to Him. When you fall, come back. He receives you, and He is not finished with you.
