What Do I Do After I Give My Life to Jesus?
First, welcome, and take a breath: you do not have to get everything right at once. Following Jesus is a walk, not a sprint, and it is carried by grace from beginning to end. The days after you come to Christ are simply about staying close to Him and letting Him grow you. There are a few simple, life-giving habits that help enormously, not rules to earn His love, which you already have, but ways to stay near the One who loves you. Think of them less as a to-do list and more as how you keep company with your new best Friend.
“And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”Acts 2:42
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;”John 8:31
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:”1 Peter 2:2
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”Philippians 1:6
The good news, plainly
The earliest believers, right after they came to faith, gave themselves to a few simple things: they continued steadfastly in the apostles' teaching, in fellowship, in breaking bread, and in prayers. That is a beautiful template for you. Get into the Word, God's teaching, by reading the Bible; start with a Gospel like John or Mark. Get into fellowship by finding a church family. Pray, simply talking to God, every day. And as a newborn desires milk, Scripture says, hunger for the Word so that you may grow. These are not burdens; they are food for a new life.
What this means for you
Growth is normal, and it takes time, so be patient with yourself. You will have good days and hard days, and you will stumble; that does not undo what God has done, and returning to Him is part of the journey, not a disqualification. The goal is not instant perfection but steady nearness to Jesus. Two more first steps matter greatly: baptism, which Jesus asks of His followers as a public sign of your new life, and telling someone, sharing simply that you have come to Christ. You do not walk this road alone. God gives you His Spirit within and His family around you.
Come to him now
Jesus said that those who continue in His word are truly His disciples, and He is the one who keeps you continuing. He that hath begun a good work in you, the Bible promises, will perform it, He will carry it to completion. So the pressure is off. You are not trying to hold on to Jesus by your own strength; He is holding on to you and growing you as you stay near. Read His words, talk to Him, gather with His people, and keep coming back when you fall. He will do in you what you cannot do in yourself.

Questions people ask
What are the very first things I should do?
Start reading a Gospel (John or Mark), begin talking to God daily in prayer, tell another believer that you have come to Christ, and find a church family. Baptism is an important early step too. Take them one at a time; you do not have to do everything this week.
Do I have to read the whole Bible right away?
No. Begin with one of the Gospels to get to know Jesus, and read a little consistently rather than a lot all at once. The point is nearness to God, not speed. A small amount each day, with an honest heart, does far more than occasional marathons.
What if I fail or fall back into old habits?
You will stumble; every believer does, and it does not cancel what God has done. When you fall, turn back to Him quickly rather than hiding. Growth comes over time, with His help and the support of other Christians. He is patient, and He is not finished with you.
