Do I Have to Go to Church to Be Saved?
The honest answer has two parts. No, going to church does not save you; only Jesus does, and He receives anyone who trusts Him, whether or not they have ever set foot in a building. And yet, once you belong to Jesus, His family, the church, becomes one of His best gifts to help you grow and not walk alone. So do not hear this as either you must attend to be saved or church does not matter. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ. And the church is where that new life is meant to be nourished, encouraged, and lived out.

The good news, plainly
Salvation comes by grace through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works. Church attendance is a good work, and Scripture is clear that no good work, however worthy, is what saves us. The thief on the cross was saved with no church membership, no baptism, no religious record, only faith in Jesus in his final hour. So your standing with God rests on Christ alone. At the same time, the Bible urges believers not to forsake gathering together, because we genuinely need one another to keep the faith and grow in it.
What this means for you
Think of it this way: you are not saved by joining the family, but you are saved into a family. A newborn is fully a child from birth, yet it thrives by being held, fed, and surrounded by love. In the same way, you are fully God's the moment you trust Christ, and you flourish in the company of other believers who pray with you, teach you, carry you when you are weak, and give you people to love and serve. Going it alone is hard and unnecessary. Church is not the price of salvation; it is part of the inheritance that comes with it.
Come to him now
Jesus did not die to give you a private, solitary religion; He died to gather a people and to be among them. He calls the church His body and His bride, and He promised to be present where His people gather in His name. So while no building saves you, the risen Christ meets His people as they come together around Him. Come to Jesus first and be saved by grace; then let Him lead you to a church family where His life in you can grow. You will find that being known and carried by others is one of the truest joys of the new life He gives.

That grief is real, and God takes it seriously; a bad experience with people does not reflect His heart for you. Not every church is the same. When you are ready, ask Him to lead you to a healthy, loving family of believers where you can heal and grow, and take it at your own pace.
