How Do I Give My Life to Jesus?

Romans 10:9

You do not have to clean yourself up first, and you do not have to understand everything before you begin. Giving your life to Jesus is not a performance you have to get right; it is a turning, of your heart toward the One who has been reaching toward you all along. It is as simple as telling God the truth: that you need Him, that you believe Jesus died for you and rose again, and that you want to belong to Him from now on. You can do that right now, in your own words, wherever you are. He is not far off, and He is not reluctant. He has been waiting for you to come.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”Romans 10:9

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”John 1:12

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”Romans 10:13

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”John 6:37

The good news, plainly

The Bible makes the way in strikingly simple. It says that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved. Two things, then, and neither is a great work you must achieve: believe that Jesus is Lord and that He truly rose, and say so honestly to God. There is no secret formula and no minimum standard of goodness to reach first. The door is opened by trust, not by trophies. What God asks of you is not that you be worthy, but that you come.

What this means for you

To give your life to Jesus is to hand Him the whole thing: your past, with its regrets; your present, with its mess; your future, which you cannot control anyway. You are not signing up for a religion so much as beginning a relationship with a Person who already loves you and gave Himself for you. It means He is now the one you follow, and it means you no longer have to run your life on your own strength. This is a beginning, not a graduation. You will not be perfect tomorrow. You will simply belong to Him, and He will begin the long, gentle work of making you new.

Come to him now

Hear what Jesus Himself promised: him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. In no wise. Not if your sins are ugly, not if you have waited too long, not if you barely have faith the size of a seed. Jesus did not come for the finished and the impressive; He came to seek and to save people exactly like you and me. He took your guilt on the cross so that coming to Him would cost you nothing but the letting go. So come. Give Him your life the way you would give your hand to someone lifting you out of deep water, not because you have earned it, but because He is holding it out.

Questions people ask

Do I have to say the words perfectly?

No. God is listening to your heart, not grading your grammar. There is no magic wording that saves you; it is Jesus who saves, and you receive Him by honest trust. Say it plainly and truly, in your own words, and He hears you.

What if I do not feel anything when I pray?

Feelings are not the measure of what happened. God's promise rests on His faithfulness, not on your emotions. Many people feel nothing at first and only later notice that everything has changed. Trust the promise, not the goosebumps.

What do I do right after I give my life to Jesus?

Tell someone, start reading about Jesus in the Gospels, begin talking to God every day, and find a church family to grow with. You do not have to figure it all out at once. Take one honest next step, and keep coming to Him.
